    USACE delivering National EOC to coordinate Togo disaster response

    Senior Togolese officials from the Ministry of Security and the National Civil Protection Agency (ANPC, based on its official name in French - l'Agence Nationale de la Protection Civile) joined leaders from the U.S. Embassy, U.S. Africa Command, North Dakota National Guard and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to celebrate the start of construction on a new National Emergency Operations Center to improve emergency response coordination for future natural disasters in Togo.

    USACE emerging construction mission in Norway supports regional security, interoperability

    Construction is getting underway later this year to upgrade perimeter fencing here as part of a growing military construction program in Norway being managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The work is the first of five already planned European Deterrence Initiative projects for the base. In addition to facilitating interoperability, training and international exercises, the European Deterrence Initiative projects aim to enhance the readiness of Rygge Air Station to support the capability of U.S. forces, Norwegian forces, NATO Allies, and partners to rapidly respond to any situation in the region should the need arise.

    Army Corps shares traffic advisory for Francis E. Walter Dam roads

    The U.S. Army Corps Engineers’ Philadelphia District shared a traffic advisory regarding roads at the Francis E. Walter Dam in White Haven, PA. With several ongoing road and bridge projects in the area, Army Corps staff have observed increased traffic along the Francis E. Walter Dam park access road. It’s important to note that the park access road is not designed as a through road. Federal law prohibits vehicles with a gross vehicle weight above 32,000 pounds (16 tons) from traveling across the dam. Vehicles with a gross vehicle weight above 32,000 pounds should find an alternate route.

    Swimming Area Closed at Blue Marsh Lake

    Swimming at the Dry Brooks Day Use Area of Blue Marsh Lake is currently restricted due to high bacteria levels. Water tests will be done daily until the levels return to a safe level for public use. This only affects the water area, picnicking and boating will not be restricted at the lake. We would also like to remind those visitors that choose to enter the water at other areas of the lake, that the water in those areas is not tested and that swimming at Blue Marsh Lake is “swim at your own risk.” Updates will be provided as conditions change.

    Norfolk District invites public to virtual change of command ceremony July 12

    NORFOLK, Va. – Col. Sonny B. Avichal will assume command of the Norfolk District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in a change of command ceremony scheduled for 10 a.m. July 12 at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia District announced an update on a dredging and marsh restoration project at the mouth of the Salem River in New Jersey. Dredging operations will begin in early July as part of contract that was awarded to Cottrell Contracting Corporation in December 2023.

    District schedules Craney Island mosquito treatment for July 1

    The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, has scheduled aerial mosquito treatment on Monday, July 1, over the federal property on Craney Island.
  • Philadelphia District Commander LTC Jeffrey Beeman and Mayor Gary Catrambone signed the agreement, which initiates a study under Section 14 of the Continuing Authorities Program. The study will investigate shoreline erosion problems and opportunities. Currently, critical infrastructure is vulnerable to erosion in the study area, which is located along the Rancocas Creek, approximately 0.25 miles from the confluence of the Delaware River along River Drive, directly parallel to Hawk Island. Erosion from Rancocas Creek threatens to undermine the Delran Sewer Plant and stormwater infrastructure along River Drive. Additionally, the newly opened Rancocas Creek River Trail is also vulnerable. The study area includes the Delran Sewer Plant and River Drive.

    FIRE ISLAND, NY– The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), New York District announces the awarding of Contract for the Maintenance Dredging of Fire Island Inlet and Shores Westerly to Jones Beach. The contract, valued at $36,978,060, was awarded to Norfolk Dredging Company, based in Chesapeake, VA.

    U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Awards Major Contract for South Shore of Staten Island

    STATEN ISLAND, NY – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), New York District, is pleased to announce the awarding of a significant contract for the construction of large interior drainage ponds and associated stormwater infrastructure in the South Shore of Staten Island (SSSI) Area-E at South Beach. The contract has been awarded to Triumph Construction Corp. for a total of $132,671,085. This contract includes the construction of detention basins connected with an open channel culvert, various stormwater drainage structures such as box culverts, junction chambers, sluice gates, weir chambers, flap gates, and inlets for future stormwater inlets, as well as the relocation of existing sanitary sewers.
  • The Chesapeake 1000 (“Chessy”) floating crane equipped with “Gus” the hydraulic grabber, wrestle a 90-ton piece of residual wreckage Friday morning, June 7, 2024, from the Fort McHenry Federal Channel. Taking roughly 45 minutes to unfold, Chessy and Gus slowly lift the mangled steel high above the Patapsco River, so a waiting barge can move underneath, allowing the wreckage to be safely lowered onto the barge for immediate processing by waiting hydraulic sheers.

    Rockaway kicks off Beach Season as Work Resumes

    Rockaway has officially kicked off its beach season, coinciding with the resumption of significant beach work in the area. Contract 1, which included multiple beach improvements for Rockaway, is now complete. This phase involved the construction of groins—stone structures designed to slow down natural beach erosion. As part of the ongoing efforts to protect the peninsula and reduce coastal storm risk, Rockaway received 14 new groins, while five existing groins were refurbished. Additionally, aging timber piers along the project area were removed.

    USACE Philly District supports Key Bridge collapse response

    In the aftermath of the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in late March 2024, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers mobilized and began working with a unified team of federal, state, and local agencies with the goals of assessing the damage and, ultimately, restoring maritime navigation. The challenge has been historic as an estimated 50,000 short tons of steel and concrete fell across the total collapsed span of the bridge.
