    After 38 years of service, the active-duty Army career of Lt. Gen. Scott Spellmon comes to a close tomorrow as he retires from military service in a ceremony at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall’s Conmy Hall.

What followed was a massive, coordinated effort by USACE and other agencies to aid in the immediate aftermath and recovery in New York City.

Connor, assistant secretary of the Army for Civil Works, announced today during a visit to the Navajo Nation in northeastern Arizona that 12 communities from across the country will be the first to participate in a pilot program specifically designed to make federal investments in small or economically disadvantaged communities.

    Born in Cecil County, Baltimore District’s Jacob Tuer was destined for a life on the water. His neighborhood had a slip for the family boat, and he spent countless hours on jon boats cruising the Elk River with his father, Jeff, who operated survey vessels for the Baltimore District from 2014 to 2018. But when a container ship struck the Key Bridge, leading to its collapse and blocking a vital shipping channel, another member of this family of Maryland watermen, Jacob’s brother Matthew, found his path converging with his brother’s in an unexpected way.

    When the sun rose over the Patapsco River on March 26, it unmasked a shadow of tragedy and despair. The historic Francis Scott Key Bridge was destroyed, the M/V DALI sat immovable in the Fort McHenry Federal Channel, six lives were lost, thousands were out of work and the flow of commerce into and out of the Port of Baltimore was brought to a halt. Knowing the mission to come, it was that morning when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District Public Affairs Office would rally its extensive communications capabilities.

    New Army Corps Vessel Upgrades Operations, Maintenance in Upstate New York

    The Albany Field Office of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ New York District ─ located in Troy, New York, on the Hudson River 150 miles north of New York City ─ recently took delivery of a new 45’ x 15’ tow boat that will significantly improve operations and maintenance activities and remove hazards to navigation on the Hudson River and adjacent upstate New York waterways.

    On August 25 of this year, the New England District will observe the 70th anniversary of Hurricanes Carol and Edna making landfall in New England. These deadly hurricanes were two of the costliest storms in New England History and served as a catalyst for the legislation that allowed the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to build the New England Hurricane Barriers that continue to protect its citizens to this day.

    ROTC Cadets hope to build on lessons learned during Europe District summer internship

    When faced with the choice of staying home or the possibility of continuing their education this summer, Reserve Officers’ Training Corps Cadets Abbi Clark (Kansas State University) and Deandre Wright (Morgan State University) both decided to apply to the ROTC Engineer Internship Program sponsored by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This program allows cadets at the to obtain first-hand experience within engineering in the Army. While there are opportunities within the continental United States and outside of the continental United States, Clark and Wright checked the box for an overseas assignment and hoped for the best.

    Portsmouth, VA— The 757th Airlift Squadron assigned to Youngstown Air Reserve Station, Ohio, will conduct an aerial mosquito spray over Craney Island and the Churchland section of Portsmouth overnight Tuesday, 21 Aug. In the event of weather or mechanical delays, the mission will take place on Wednesday, 22 Aug.

    USACE Responds to Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapse

    In the early morning of March 26, 2024, crew aboard Motor Vessel DALI issued the mayday call moments before the crash that took down the Francis Scott Key Bridge, enabling authorities to limit vehicle traffic on the span. The collapse of this pivotal piece of infrastructure sent eight construction workers into the Patapsco River below, taking the lives of six of them.

    U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the Pacific Theater: Overcoming Unprecedented Challenges

    In the most primitive, undeveloped, and remote areas of the Pacific Ocean, China, and Southeast Asia, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers played a crucial role during World War II. These regions, often covered with impenetrable jungles, teeming with tropical insects and diseases, cut by swift and wide rivers, and crossed by rugged mountains, presented formidable challenges. The engineers faced the task of creating logistical facilities at the end of tenuous supply lines stretching hundreds, if not thousands, of miles back to developed bases.
