  • The Waterfield Building, located on the grounds of historic Fort Norfolk, opened in 1983 and serves as the headquarters for the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

    Norfolk District invites public to virtual change of command ceremony July 8

    NORFOLK, Va. – Col. Brian P. Hallberg will assume command of the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in a change of command ceremony scheduled for 10 a.m. July 8 at the city’s Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center. The public may view the ceremony live on the District’s YouTube channel and Facebook page.

    Corps to host virtual stakeholders public meeting for Gathright Dam pulse releases

    COVINGTON, Va. – The Norfolk District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is hosting a virtual stakeholders public meeting on June 15 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. to learn more about the Gathright Dam and the upcoming scheduled pulse releases. Members of the public are encouraged to attend and ask questions.

    SUFFOLK, Va. — Restoration efforts at the Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot (FNOD) remain an ongoing priority for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). Community members can learn more about this Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) and hear the latest cleanup progress during the project’s quarterly Restoration Advisory Board (RAB) virtual meeting scheduled for 6:15 to 8:15 p.m. June 3 via Webex.

    Corps conducts semi-annual inspection at Gathright Dam ahead of pulse releases

    COVINGTON, Va – The Norfolk District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) conducted a semi-annual inspection of the Gathright Dam on May 10-14 as part of the District's comprehensive dam safety program ahead of yearly pulse releases scheduled to begin in June.

    U.S. Army delivers projects to help serve the most vulnerable in Albania

    The United States Embassy in Albania celebrated the 30th anniversary of the reestablishment of ties between the United States and Albania earlier this year, highlighting the close bond between the two nations since 1991. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has supported that relationship for years, carrying out humanitarian assistance projects throughout Albania funded through the European Command – or EUCOM.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Europe District has delivered an additional secure home for part of the Israeli Air Force’s fleet of F-35 fighter jets, with a small ceremony marking the completion of another Hardened Hangar project on site earlier this year in March.

    Europe District’s Office of Counsel tackles unique challenges in supporting overseas mission

    The Office of Counsel is critical to delivering projects in any U.S. Army Corps of Engineers District office — and overseas in Europe District is no exception.
  • The Mayor of Malanville, accepts keys to a newly constructed health clinic from Humanitarian Assistance Program Coordinator Cosme Quenum, a local national with the U.S. Embassy in Cotonou, Benin in the village of Money, Benin in Africa at the end of January 2021. The clinic and various associated facilities also built with it comprise one of two similar clinic projects recently completed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in that region of Benin through funding from AFRICOM and coordinated closely with the U.S. State Department.

    Projects in Benin increase both healthcare capacity and ability to document births

    Villagers in two communities in northeast Benin will no longer need to cross the border to give birth or receive other basic medical care with the delivery of two new medical facilities in the remote villages of Money and Godjekoara, both of which sit in the larger border region of the Commune of Malanville. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Europe District implemented and managed the construction of the facilities. Project requirements and funding were provided by AFRICOM with onsite coordination provided by the U.S. Embassy and Office of Security Cooperation.

    A multidisciplinary team from the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, joined the Federal Emergency Management Agency in an assessment of a local site for conversion into a federally supported community vaccination center, March 23, 2021, in Norfolk, Virginia. FEMA officially opened that location today as a Type 2 center, capable of administering approximately 3,000 vaccinations a day and directly supporting President Joe Biden’s goal of administering 100 million vaccinations within the first 100 days of his administration.

    A multidisciplinary team from the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, joined the Federal Emergency Management Agency in an assessment of a local site for conversion into a federally supported community vaccination center here last week.

    District conducting controlled flood release at Gathright Da

    COVINGTON, Va. – Operators at Gathright Dam began a controlled flood storage release Tuesday due to increased rainfall. Beginning at 9 a.m., operators at the dam gradually increased the release rate from 1,200 cubic feet per second (cfs) to 5,000 cfs over a three-hour period. This change in release rates will increase river stages at the dam about 2.7 feet and approximately 2.5 feet in Covington over the next 6 to 10 hours.
  • The project is being executed through the Department of Defense's AFRICOM humanitarian assistance program to improve future prospects for Togolese youth.

    SUFFOLK, Va. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers team managing restoration efforts at the Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot will provide a progress update to community members and the public during a virtual meeting March 4.

  • Restoration Regulation

    A $30 million project on the Manokin River in Somerset County is on track to be the world’s largest oyster restoration effort. For any restoration project, permits are required to evaluate potential project impacts - both positive and negative - on the environment before work can proceed. While USACE has been the lead for reef construction efforts on other tributaries, in the case of the Manokin, USACE played the role of regulator.
