  • The North Atlantic Coast Comprehensive Study's goals are to 1) Provide risk reduction strategies—reduce risk to which vulnerable coastal populations are subject 2) Promote coastal resilient communities—ensure a sustainable and robust coastal landscape system—considering future sea level rise and climate change scenarios—to reduce risk to vulnerable population, property, ecosystems, and infrastructure. The $19.5 million Comprehensive Study is due to congress in January 2015.     USACE releases report on coastal storm, flood risk in North Atlantic region

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers today released to the public a report detailing the results of a two-year study to address coastal storm and flood risk to vulnerable populations, property, ecosystems, and infrastructure in the North Atlantic region of the United States affected by Hurricane Sandy in October, 2012.

    The New England District has entered into a STEM Partnership in Education Agreement with Worcester State University in Massachusetts. Col. Christopher Barron, New England District Commander, and New England District’s STEM coordinator, Mark Anderson, traveled to the university to meet with President Barry Maloney on Oct. 27, to sign the agreement.

    SAVANNAH, Ga. – As 2014 departs, so will 12 members of the 542nd Forward Engineering Support Team – Advanced (FEST-A), who deploy to Kuwait in January for more than six months to provide specialized technical engineering support for the Central Command area of responsibility.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Releases Robust Climate Change Adaptation, Strategic Sustainability Plans

    In response to Executive Orders 13514 and 13653, the United States Army Corps of Engineers today released its Climate Change Adaptation Plan and annual Strategic Sustainability Plan. "The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has been factoring climate change and its impacts in to all its missions and operations for decades. The Corps of Engineers is working with the Obama Administration to identify and address the existing and future risks and vulnerabilities of climate change and ensure that communities and ecosystems are protected and flourish." said Jo-Ellen Darcy, Assistant Secretary of the Army (Civil Works) and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Senior Sustainability Officer.

  • The Forward Engineering Support Team-Advanced, deploying to Liberia in support of Operation United Assistance, is honored with a departure ceremony at U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Europe District headquarters in Wiesbaden, Germany Oct. 20, 2014. The 13-member team of military and civilian technical experts — from electrical and environmental engineers, to real estate and power generation specialists — will support the construction of Ebola Treatment Units as part of the operation. The ETUs will be constructed at site locations chosen by the Government of Liberia Ministry of Health and the Armed Forces of Liberia to assist in the containment of Ebola. Additionally, USACE military and civilian personnel will assist with the construction, planning, surveying, and design of life-support and logistics facilities in Senegal and Liberia. U.S. Agency for International Development is the lead U.S. Government organization for the operation and U.S. Africa Command is supporting the effort by providing command and control, logistics, training and engineering assets — including the FEST-A — to contain the Ebola virus outbreak in West African nations.

    Jeffrey McMaster, resident engineer at the Fort Detrick Area Office, received the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District, Hero of the Year award from District Engineer and Commander Col. Trey Jordan at a Sept. 16 ceremony. He earned the District award for his poise and professionalism following the August 2013 laboratory fire at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases replacement project. He provided accurate and timely reporting to Corps leaders in the aftermath of the incident.

    The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, awarded Polu Kai Services, LLC -- a native Hawaiian owned, small disadvantaged business, service-disabled veteran owned business -- with a $4.3 million contract on August 25 to make upgrades to the facility, including its basement space visitor bathrooms, and the electrical, water and fire protection systems.
  • Two vessels belonging to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District, will be participating in the Star-Spangled Spectacular festivities, taking place throughout the Baltimore area September 10-16. The Linthicum, a hydrographic research vessel, and the Reynolds, a debris removal vessel, will be providing free public ship tours from 12:00 to 17:00 each of those days.     District continues commitment to James; issues order to dredge

    As part of the three year, $12 million indefinite delivery/indefinite quality contract with Cottrell Contracting Corporation, the district issued a $3.2 million task order to dredge 475,000 cubic yards of sediment causing shoals in the James River at Dancing Point and Jordan Point on June 17.
