    Paying it Forward: USACE Engineers Serve as Mentors, Guest Lecturers

    HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Promoting STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education is more than a passing trend for Derek Maxey and Don Whitmore, two registered professional engineers with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Huntington District. Both quietly volunteer as guest lecturers at local universities, bringing their real-world experience and stories from the field to undergraduate students. Maxey, a mechanical engineer and Whitmore, a civil engineer, are committed to inspiring and mentoring tomorrow's engineers, they said.

    Corps teaches third-graders 'Regulatory 101'

    SAVANNAH, Ga. - Inside a colorful, decorated classroom at Marshpoint Elementary School, Brian Moore, a regulatory specialist with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Savannah District, poured a gallon of water over a row of sponges. "We use sponges to represent wetlands because they absorb and filter water," Moore explained to a group of third-graders. "Wetlands filter water so that it's clean for us to drink."

    GALVESTON, Texas -- U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District Civil Engineer Franchelle Craft was selected as a Science Spectrum Trailblazer Award recipient by the 28th Black Engineer of the Year Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Global Competitiveness Conference, an honor bestowed upon minority men and women who actively create new paths for others in science, research, technology and development.

    Pablo Vázquez-Ruiz, south Puerto Rico resident engineer, has been elected as president of the Ponce Chapter of the College of Engineers and Surveyors of Puerto Rico as well as treasurer of the College of Engineers and Surveyors of Puerto Rico. Vázquez-Ruiz has been resident engineer for the Ponce Resident Office since April 2001.

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Sept. 12, 2013) -- A group of technical experts from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District participated in Hands-On Science and Engineering Day at Stratford STEM Magnet High School today to guide young students with budding interests in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

    STEM grads critical to U.S. military mission

    WASHINGTON (Army News Service, Aug. 14, 2013) -- The Army and America both need more scientists, engineers, mathematicians and technology specialists, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is now doing something about that, said its commander. As part of an effort to turn young students on to science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, career choices, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, or USACE, in May signed an agreement to partner with the Department of Defense Education Activity, known as DODEA, schools to bring engineering-related experiences to the classroom, said Lt. Gen. Thomas P. Bostick, Corps commander.

    People use acronyms and abbreviations such as NASA or FBI because they are less clumsy and easier to write and remember than the complete expression they represent. One of the newest acronyms gaining mainstream usage is STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

    Army Corps of Engineers signs first cooperation agreement with Nicholls State University

    THIBODAUX, La.-- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District, signed its first Memorandum of Agreement with Nicholls State University, July 17. The Memorandum of Agreement, or MOA, establishes the basis for mutual understanding and cooperation between the corps and the university, with a focus on the school's Department of Applied Science, Geomatics Program.

    WIESBADEN, Germany- With four right hands raised in the air, the 17th class of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Europe District interns took the civilian service oath of office. The district welcomed Michael Gray-Lewis, Yillian Rivera, Donatello Barrett and Tiffany Williams -- this year's Advancing Minorities' Interest in Engineering students -- to Europe in early June.

    NASHVILLE, Tenn.--The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District collaborated with the Tennessee State University Engineering Department to mentor science, technology, engineering and math students during a four-week National Summer Transportation Institute program June 9 through July 7, 2013. Corps personnel mentored and instructed students on a variety of engineering classes and current projects.

    Science and arts symposium keeps students focused

    The Aviation and Missile Research Development and Engineering Center and the U.S. Army Engineering and Support Center, Huntsville collaborated on this science, technology, engineering, math and arts education outreach event, providing mentors and judges for the science and technology competition. The experience gave students a clearer picture of what skills are needed to work in careers, particularly in the fields of science, technology and mathematics.

    The Army honors excellence in STEM education

    LEESBURG, Va.-- Students excelling in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics were recently recognized at the 11th Annual eCYBERMISSION National Judging and Education Event in Leesburg, Va. The U.S. Army's eCYBERMISSION program is a web-based STEM competition free for students in grades six through nine in which teams compete for state, regional and national awards while working to solve problems in their communities.

    DUCK, N.C.--The Engineer Research and Development Center's Field Research Facility in Duck, N.C., recently hosted Resolute Marine Energy for a full-scale test and evaluation of their surge wave energy converter (WEC). Resolute Marine Energy is a Boston, Mass.-based company developing technologies that produce clean energy from ocean waves.
