    More than 100 middle-school students from across Maryland learned about blocking cell phone signals, surveying downtown city streets, and using science to pinpoint the origins of an epidemic as part of some of the many activities at the annual “Easy as Pi” event hosted by the Baltimore Chapter of the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) Wednesday, March 30 in downtown Baltimore.

    The Pathways Program has three sections: Internship Program for current students; the Recent Graduates Program for people who have recently graduated from qualifying educational institutions or programs (2 years from the date the graduate completed an academic course of study); and the reinvigorated Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program for people who obtained an advanced degree (e.g., graduate or professional degree) within the preceding two years. These programs, collectively the Pathways Programs, are streamlined developmental programs tailored to promote employment opportunities for students and recent graduates in the Federal workforce.

    New York District Participated in Estuary Day in 2015 in Elizabeth, N.J. Area students and educators from 14 different schools participated. Orchestrated by Future City Inc., and sponsored by the Elizabeth River/Arthur Kill Watershed Association, the event’s success was attributed to a concerted effort and steadfast partnership with strong local support.

    The New England District has entered into a STEM Partnership in Education Agreement with Worcester State University in Massachusetts. Col. Christopher Barron, New England District Commander, and New England District’s STEM coordinator, Mark Anderson, traveled to the university to meet with President Barry Maloney on Oct. 27, to sign the agreement.

    Eleven high school students from Camden County, N.J. learned about environmental remediation, large-scale construction, and the importance of problem solving during a visit with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia District.

    More than 70 volunteers participated in this year’s Clean the Bay Day with the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The location: the Craney Island Dredged Material Management Area here June 7, 2014. Volunteers from Williamsburg, James City County, Yorktown, Newport News, Poquoson, Hampton, Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Plymouth, Minnesota participated. Organizations represented included not only the Norfolk District but also members from Lafayette, Woodside, I.C. Norcom and Churchland High Schools, Girls Scout Troup 1381, Bayside Area Boy Scouts, Boy Scout Troup 6, Norfolk State University, Old Dominion University, Army, Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, the Society of Military Engineers and other organizations not captured. A total of 68 bags of trash - 1,410 pounds of bagged trash and approximately 590 pounds of bulk non-bagged items – were collected. The most unusual items included a sledge hammer, a dog carcass, a kayak paddle, one dead turtle, a respirator, an arrow and one big red ball. The majority of debris was cigarette butts, plastic bottles and Styrofoam from buoys.

    Shake, rattle and roll. No, it’s not the Elvis Presley song, it’s the way Far East District engineers graded students during an earthquake tower challenge at Seoul American Middle School. “We are trying to introduce the students to engineering principles,” said Doug Bliss, chief of the geotechnical and environmental engineering branch. “In this case they’re doing dynamic loading of towers. They’re learning engineering at a rudimentary level.”

    Kristen Donofrio, a biological scientist with the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers since 2009. Her passion is ecology - the study of environmental systems, or as it is sometimes called, the economy of nature. According to Donofrio, environmental usually means relating to the natural, versus human-made world, and by its very nature, not just the components of nature but how the parts interact.

The biologist reaches the parking spot and swings a leg over her cobalt blue motorcycle, slides a slick, made-for-speed helmet over her dark brown bob, and turns the engine over.     WIESBADEN, Germany -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Europe District challenged Wiesbaden Middle School students to explain, in 500 words or less, why they are interested in pursuing science, technology, engineering and math careers. The winners -- Pete Greig, Chuck Oliver and Isabella Lee -- representing the sixth, seventh and eighth grades, respectively, were selected from a pool of 80 contest entrants by Department of Defense Dependents Schools officials.
