    Nursing and Engineering: A Surprisingly Unsurprising Pairing

    When I walked into the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Far East District (FED) building on my first day as a summer hire, I felt some uncertainty and confusion as to how I, a nursing major, could contribute to the district. I had never taken an engineering class, nor had I even visited a construction site before. The confusion extended into the district employees as well, as they looked at me and asked, “nursing and engineering? I can’t see how those two have any relation.”

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ John Martin Dam received significant maintenance and minor repairs in a recently completed conduit project.
  • The Rivers Project Office in West Alton, Mo., is conducting its first timber sale and harvest in order to promote the establishment of early successional floodplain forest along the Mississippi River. The objective of this project is to improve forest health and enhance habitat for a variety of wildlife. Bids are now open to the public.

    The Rivers Project Office in West Alton, Mo., is conducting its first timber sale and harvest in order to promote the establishment of early successional floodplain forest along the Mississippi River. The objective of this project is to improve forest health and enhance habitat for a variety of wildlife. Bids are now open to the public.

    101st ABN DIV Engineers and USACE Nashville District partner to load at Lock C for JRTC Rotation

    INDIAN MOUND, Tenn. (Jul 21, 2020) – U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District in partnership with Fort Campbell Ky., recently completed a $2 million project to upgrade the Lock C location on the Cumberland River in Indian Mound, Tenn. Upon completion of the project, USACE handed over operational control to the post.

    Camp Prince Historical Marker Dedication

    The Raleigh County Historical Society unveiled a marker at Camp Prince Army Station on Friday, July 17. Camp Prince was an Engineer training and testing facility that provided testing of bridging equipment and techniques that were employed in the Korean War and training for the Army until 1957. The site was originally chosen for its unique directional flows and proximity to the Bluestone Dam. The terrain at Camp Prince is also very similar to the terrain in Korea.

    Recently the Huntington District celebrated the beginning of the Phase 5 Stilling Basin of the Bluestone Dam Safety Assurance Mega-Project by holding a ground breaking ceremony. The ceremony featured speeches by Colonel Jason Evers, Major General Robert Whittle, Frank Piedimonte, President and COO, Brayman Construction Corp; Mayor Jack Scott of the City of Hinton; Senator Shelly Moore-Capito; Congresswoman Carol Miller; Mara Boggs, State Director for Senator Joe Manchin III; and, Mike Hall, Chief of Staff to Governor Jim Justice.

    South Pacific Division welcomes new commander

    Brig. Gen. Paul E. Owen assumed command of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers South Pacific Division from Brig. Gen. Kim Colloton during a formal change of command ceremony today at the Bay Model Visitor Center in Sausalito, Calif. As commander of South Pacific Division, Owen oversees water resources, military construction, environmental stewardship and restoration and emergency management in 10 states including 1,100 miles of coast line, 3.9 million acres of estuarine wetlands, 2,290 miles of federal levees and 46 dams and reservoirs. Most recently, South Pacific Division responded to the COVID-19 pandemic working with partner agencies to establish eight alternate care facilities across eight states.

    Monolithic effort to construct lock chamber heats up

    CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (July 23, 2020) – A monolithic effort to construct a navigation chamber at the Chickamauga Lock Replacement Project is heating up where the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District has already placed 19,000 cubic yards of concrete and more than 700 tons of reinforcing steel.

    District finishes 2019 flood damage repairs near Clear Creek

    OMAHA, Neb. - Sixteen months after devastating floods wreaked havoc in the Midwest, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District Systems Restoration Team has made significant progress restoring levee breaches and repairing damaged embankments along the Missouri River and its tributaries. To date, the Corps has closed 28 of 32 breaches.

    District reaches important milestone on Ditch 251 cleanout project

    While we humans are not that fond of change, we have an amazing ability to adapt to change. Adaptability is a strength the Caruthersville Area Office (CAO) and our Project Delivery Teams (PDT) quickly leveraged when they had to switched to virtual pre-construction conferences to continue pushing projects forward. Five months into COVID-19 pandemic working conditions, virtual pre-construction conferences are the new normal—for now. On July 15, the CAO and PDT members held a virtual pre-construction conference to kick-off work on the Ditch 251 Lower Channel Cleanout project. The purpose of pre-construction conferences is to kick-off the project with a “face-to-face” meeting of key members from the contractor, Federal Government, and project partner to achieve a clear and mutual understanding of all contract requirements and to identify and resolve potential problems.

  • Corps, Quail Forever work together to restore wildlife habitat

    While the primary mission of Wappapello Lake is as a flood-control reservoir, wildlife and land management also fall under the responsibility of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and recently, it has partnered with the Black River chapter of Quail Forever to improve wildlife habitat in the Asher Creek area.

    Alaska District breathes new life into 1940’s-era headquarters building

    In 1979, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Alaska District added 37,800 square feet of dark brown, steel siding and trim to its headquarters and laboratory buildings located on what is now known as Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. Since then, the organization has grown to more than 400 employees and implemented projects across Alaska and the Indo-Pacific Region. But, during nearly half of the district’s history, the exterior of the facility stayed the same color, weathering storms and harsh Alaskan winters each year.

    From studying how fish can protect Soldiers to supporting tactical military planning, four researchers at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) have been honored with Women of Color (WOC) STEM awards — an annual, national-level recognition of significant contributions to science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
  • The Far East District USACE Leadership Development Program (ULDP) class of 2020 was recognized on their graduation July 8 at the district headquarters. The team consisted of six GS-12 and KGS-11 employees from various career fields and was named WIP6, which stands for “Work in Progress 6.” The group completed a 14 month program to enhance and develop their skills as leaders.     In the past couple of years, “hammocking” has become a growing trend across the country and now people wishing to “hammock” can do so in a designated area at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District, Saylorville Lake project. Typically, use of a hammock on Corps property is strictly prohibited but thanks to the installation of hammock poles, people can now enjoy the activity without breaking rules or damaging trees.
