    Army Corps personnel from New York District, and representatives from the Town of Greenwich, Conn. hosted a National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) Scoping Public Meeting for the Byram River Flood Risk Management study in Greenwich, Conn. in November 2017. Residents, stakeholders, and other interested parties filled the Western Greenwich Civic Center as Army Corps personnel discuss non-structural, replacement of bridges, and minor channel improvements as potential alternatives for flood risk management measures within the study area of the Byram River, which tributaries flow through Greenwich and Port Chester.

    Army Corps engages students and promotes STEM Careers

    For most New York City high school students, General Election Day is a day off and a time to take part in other activities. One group of 60 students from various schools in Manhattan used their time wisely on November 7th to learn more about careers in engineering and the sciences and attended the ‘Sixth Annual STEM Matters NYC Career Day’ offered at the New York District.

    Just outside the National Capital Region, construction is underway on a new innovative center for some of the most highly-trained employees in the U.S. Secret Service. The roughly $9.6-million, 20,500 square-foot cutting-edge center will feature spacious, efficient work areas with proprietary equipment, multi-purpose rooms, an emergency medical area, plenty of natural light and superior ventilation. Its primary beneficiaries are not people, however — they’re Belgian Malamars and Dutch Shepherds.

    Gathright Dam Stakeholders Meeting

    On November 2, 2017, Col. Jason Kelly, along with several key members of the Norfolk District, met with stakeholders, partners, and local citizens concerning flood control, low flow augmentation, recreation, and hydropower. Nestled in the hills of Covington, Virginia stakeholders were taken on a tour of Gathright Dam, which was immediately followed by an in-depth discussion on Gathright Dam. Several of the key speakers included: Col. Jason Kelly, Raymond Dridge, Matthew McKeehan, Anthony Lockridge, Alicia Farrow, Robin Williams, and Owen Reece. Also contributing to the discussion were representatives from the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF) and Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). Attached are the slides and information from that meeting.
