    From strangers to family

    Thinking she was just going to perform a regular biological site survey, Carissa never suspected that one hour would end up changing the rest of her life. Carissa Agnese, Army Corps of Engineers Norfolk District planning department senior biologist, has what is called polycystic kidney disease. It’s a hereditary disease that grows cysts on the kidney, eating away at the tissue until they can’t function anymore.

    Twenty-five years of work at Poplar Island brings improved habitat, expanded use of dredged material

    For the past 25 years, the Paul S. Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island has built island habitat in the Chesapeake Bay. Since 1994, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District, and its partners have been working to restore remote island habitat in the Chesapeake Bay by beneficially using dredged material at Poplar Island.

    NORFOLK, Va. – James River Federal Navigation Project engineers are ramping up efforts to minimize shoaling effects and improve safe navigation along Central Virginia’s winding watershed. Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Cottrell Contracting Corp. commenced maintenance dredging Sunday in the 7.6-mile Dancing Point-Swann Point channel.

    District Shares Water-Resource Missions at Waterfront Festival

    The New York District participated in the 12th Annual City of Water Day, a free harbor-wide event with a variety of activities celebrating some 1,600 miles of coastline in the New York region. Sponsored by the Waterfront Alliance, a nonprofit agency advocating public involvement in water-based activities, the event brought together the public, water enthusiasts and families interested in harbor activities amid a carnival-like atmosphere with water as the main attraction.
  • The North Landing Bridge, which spans the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway on the border of Chesapeake, Virginia and Virginia Beach, Virginia, handles approximately 11,000 vehicles per day under normal conditions. The bridge was damaged by two separate barge strikes, the first on March 1, 2016, the second on June 4, 2016.

    North Landing Bridge closed to vehicle traffic for repairs

    Following emergency repairs this week, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Norfolk District officials said North Landing Bridge should be reopen to vehicle traffic before noon Thursday.

    Philadelphia District holds Change of Command Ceremony

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Philadelphia District ushered in new leadership as Lt. Col. David C. Park assumed command of the organization from Lt. Col. Kristen N. Dahle during a July 12th ceremony in the Wanamaker Building's Crystal Tea Room. Park became the 60th commander in the District's 153 year history.
