    New York and New Jersey Harbor Anchorages Study takes crucial step

    A U.S. Army Corps of Engineers study aimed at improving navigation and generating transportation-cost savings for deep-draft ships using New York and New Jersey Harbor terminals reached a key milestone Thursday. Lt. Gen. Todd Semonite, chief of engineers and USACE commanding general, signed a Chief’s Report, recommending the New York and New Jersey Harbor Anchorages Study’s findings for authorization by Congress.

    To help New York State hospitals deal with this, Army Corps’ New York District volunteers are working 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  They are locating existing buildings that can be converted into these alternate care facilities and then they are designing and constructing them.

    Army Corps, Partners Construct Alternate Care Facility at State University of New York at Stony Brook, Long Island N.Y.

    The Alternate Care Facility is taking shape on the State University of New York at Stony Brook on Long Island to facilitate the care for COVID-19 patients. The Corps awarded the $101 million contract to build a 1,000-bed temporary hospital and part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ efforts to support the Federal Emergency Management Agency response.
  • A team for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Norfolk and Transatlantic Middle East Districts conduct an assessment of a facility in Northern Virginia to determine its suitability for COVID-19 response. A facility assessment does not mean that a facility will be used.

    Middle East District Assists with Coronavirus Assessments

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Transatlantic Middle East District (TAM) mission is primarily outside the continental U.S but USACE’s Norfolk District asked for assistance in conducting assessments of Northern Virginia facilities that could potentially be adapted as alternate care facilities (ACF) and Team TAM members were happy to assist.
  • Work continues to convert the Westchester County Center into an alternate care facility that will be home to 100 acute-COVID19 patients. Work is expected to be complete on April 19.

    USACE Alternate Care Facility Mission Continues at the Westchester County Center

    White Plains-- On any given weekend you’ll find the Westchester County Center buzzing with excitement. From basketball tournaments, to live shows, to public meetings, the convention center was a local melting pot of events, people, and cultures. Now the convention center has a new mission, to serve as an alternate care facility. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, is making it just that. A little over three weeks ago a Mission Assignment Task Order (MATO) was assigned to the New York District by FEMA in order to build alternate care facilities in the wake of the worldwide COVID19 crisis. USACE was deployed under a National activation to provide initial planning and engineering support (Emergency Support Function 3 – Public Works & Engineering) Nationwide to address possible medical facility shortages in the U.S. One FEMA MA was issued to USACE Headquarters for a Fusion Cell for disaster response planning.

    District announces procedures for safe lockings during COVID-19 pandemic

    Effective March 31, the locks at Deep Creek, Virginia, and South Mills, North Carolina, returned to their normal operating schedule to accommodate vessels using the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway's Dismal Swamp Canal.
  • Meetings are taking place inside the Hampton Roads Convention Center in Hampton Virginia between local, state and federal representatives on how best to convert the building into an alternate care facility. The Federal Emergency Management Agency tasked the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to evaluate and recommend sites for Alternative Care Facilities in Virginia, and Governor Northam approved locations in Northern Virginia, Richmond and Hampton Roads. Norfolk District personnel, along with the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, the Virginia Department of Health, the Virginia National Guard and emergency management personnel from local and regional governments are now meeting with health care professionals and representatives from area health care systems to plan how best to convert the selected sites to meet their needs.     Army Corps, Partners Establish Alternate Care Facility at Javits Center; First Patients Arrive

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, under the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s mission assignment in conjunction with many state, federal and local partners, has made significant progress converting the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City to an alternate care facility to meet the demand for hospital beds created by the Coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19).

    Work is being done in support of FEMA-led COVID-19 Pandemic Response NEW YORK— The US Army Corps of Engineers, USACE, continues to make significant progress in its efforts to support the FEMA-led response to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic. Nationwide, USACE has received 5 FEMA Mission Assignments (MAs) totaling $357 million, and has more than 250 personnel providing support.
