    BALTIMORE – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Baltimore District safely rehomed 25-30k honeybees that were found during abatement and demolition services at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (BARC) in Beltsville, Md., July 26, 2023.

    Transformative project at Graf breaks ground, first step in dozens of new buildings for rotational troops

    German and U.S. Army leaders marked the formal start of construction for a $1.3 billion project here intended to include nearly 50 buildings and house more than 5,000 Soldiers. The first Operational Readiness Training Complex will be built over about 10 years and will include all the facilities needed for an entire brigade set of troops and equipment to train and operate on a rotational basis.

  • Biden-Harris Administration announces $454 million in Army Corps of Engineers’ Civil Works investments for emergency repairs, flood and storm damage reduction, aquatic ecosystem restoration, and navigation projects

    WASHINGTON – The Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works announced today additional U.S. Army Corps of Engineers studies and projects funded through President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), the Disaster Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (DRSAA) of 2022, and the DRSAA of 2023. These actions invest over $454 million to help communities reduce their flood risks from coastal storms and to restore delicate aquatic ecosystems.

    JBLE Langley to conduct annual mosquito spraying mission

    The 757th Airlift Squadron assigned to Youngstown Air Reserve Station, Ohio, will conduct an aerial mosquito spray over Langley Air Force Base, Craney Island and the Churchland section of Portsmouth overnight Wednesday, July 26, 2023. In the event of weather or mechanical delays, the mission will take place on Thursday, July 27, 2023. Although no insecticide applications will occur outside the target areas of Langley Air Force Base and Craney Island/Churchland, the Pest Management department recommends that beekeepers adjacent to these areas cover their hives in the evening to help prevent any loss of bees.

    Gathright Dam pulse release set for July 19

    The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, will conduct a pulse release at Gathright Dam, near Covington, Va., Wednesday, July 19, 2023, beginning at approximately 6 a.m.

    Research shows minerals can help mitigate PFAS in groundwater

    Emerging chemicals of environmental concern in water represent a major challenge for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in terms of exposure risks to humans and the environment. The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) is working to understand detection, fate and transport, and remediation of a group of these chemicals, generally known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

    Wrackcycling: Using nature to build stronger dune systems

    Most beachgoers don’t think anything of the brown line of seaweed and other organic material that marks beach tide lines. This natural material that washes onto the beach – called wrack – includes algae, sea grasses and some invertebrates such as sponges and soft corals. Despite its unassumingness, wrack may be essential to helping dunes in protecting coastal shorelines from damaging weather such as hurricanes and tropical storms.

    Gathright Dam pulse release scheduled for June 21

    The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, will conduct a pulse release at Gathright Dam, near Covington, Va., June 21, 2023, beginning at approximately 6 a.m. Water releases will gradually increase and peak at 3,500 cubic feet per second by 9 a.m. People should be aware of river fluctuations caused by the pulse.

    From Antiquated to Automated: USACE wetland delineation tool helps revolutionize regulatory process

    According to the Environmental Protection Agency, United States has lost more than half of its wetlands since the 1600s, and approximately 35 percent of the world’s wetlands were lost between 1970 and 2015. To protect against further impairment of wetlands and the essential functions they provide, the U.S. established a policy of "no net loss" of wetlands, as well as procedures to ensure responsible management of wetland resources.
