    Corps safety team helps contractor at Fort Detrick earn safety award

    The Corps of Engineers contractor (Manhattan/Torcon Joint Venture) building the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) at Fort Detrick has earned a key project safety award from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. They received a plaque recognizing their achievement at a ceremony at the installation Community Center on Sept. 18.

    District leaders ‘stand down’ for suicide prevention training

    Employees wrapped up their suicide prevention stand-down activities here Oct. 15. The effort, which included manager-led training sessions and small group discussions for each employee was part of the Army-wide suicide prevention stand-down conducted Sept. 27. Training and discussions for supervisors and employees focused on the Army’s award-winning ACE or “Ask, Care and Escort,” which encourages Soldiers and employees at all levels to be alert to suicide warning signs, ask directly if a person is thinking about suicide, care for the person and escort to the person to professional help.

    Army Corps, NYC Parks, National Park Service, beginning coastal storm risk reduction work at Plumb Beach

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, working in partnership with the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation and the National Park Service, will manage the placement of sand along eroded portions of Plumb Beach in Brooklyn today as part of the first phase of coastal storm risk reduction work.
  • PORTSMOUTH Va. – Col. Paul Olsen presents Jorel Nadal, a district safety and health specialist, with the pen he used to sign the Voluntary Protection Program Commitment Statement affirming the district’s support to participate in the safety program at the Craney Island Dredge Material Management Area here. Nadal worked to get the program off the ground at the facility, which will make the area safer for employees through extensive documentation and modeling, which identifies problematic areas; giving employers the chance to see trends and correct deficiencies.

    District one step closer to being accepted into OSHA program

    The Voluntary Protection Program uses performance-based criteria and requires extensive documentation in order to be in compliance. The program uses different models and tools to try and identify problematic areas so agencies can attempt to minimize and eliminate as many accidents as possible.

  • Corps of Engineers project pulls out World War II fuel storage tanks

    Early in World War II, the U.S. government acquired a 305 acre area in Monaca, Pa., on the banks of Raccoon Creek northwest of Pittsburgh. The purpose was strategic and secret -- build six petroleum, oil and lubricant storage tanks to store almost 10 million gallons of fuel as the East Coast reserve for defense fuel.

    Gathright Dam located in Alleghany County, Va., impounds the water flowing down the Jackson River to create the 2,500 acre Lake Moomaw. The dam has prevented numerous floods over its 30 plus year existence saving countless dollars and lives.

    Gathright Dam ‘test pulse’ to increase Jackson River water flow

    State and federal agencies will use Gathright Dam near Covington, Va. to simulate a storm event on the Jackson River Oct. 3. The test pulse, conducted by the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, will begin at approximately 6 a.m. and peak at 3,500 cubic feet per second.

    Colonel Paul Owen assumed command of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, during a formal change of command ceremony on September 14, 2012. Colonel John R. Boulé, who commanded the district since July 2009, relinquished command during the event in the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House. A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Colonel Owen graduated in 1990 from the United States Military Academy at West Point with a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering.

  • Army Corps Restores Marsh Islands in Jamaica Bay N.Y.

    To quell further erosion of Jamaica Bay salt marsh islands, and adding to an already impressive list of habitat restoration projects in the Bay, the Army Corps commenced the placement of sand from the Harbor Deepening Project’s Ambrose Channel contract in August 2012 to restore Black Wall and Rulers Bar marsh islands.

    Army Corps releases history booklet on area with ongoing flood risk management work

    Archaeology and understanding the past are always important parts of any U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project, whether it’s something small or it’s a project as massive as flood risk management project the Corps is undertaking in the Green Brook Sub-Basin in New Jersey. In that spirit, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has released a publication highlighting the history of the Bound Brook area where the flood risk reduction work is ongoing and ranges from building floodwalls, levees, gates and pump stations to raising bridges. The book is entitled “Where the Green Brook Meets the Raritan.”

    Revived program puts employees on track for leadership

    After 20 years, the U.S. Navy had taught Pam Reid-Szalanski a certain way to manage people. “In the military, as a manager, you direct your people to do something and it’s understood that it’s an order – it must be done,” she said. “Time for questions is later.” Reid-Szalanski is one of four who recently graduated from the Norfolk District’s Leadership Development Program – a curriculum she credits with perfecting the art of civilian management.

    SUFFOLK, Va. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will host its third quarterly meeting of the Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot, or FNOD, Restoration Advisory Board Thursday, Sept. 6, from 6:15 to 8:15 p.m. The meeting, which is open to the public, will be held at the Courtyard Marriott located at 8060 Harbour View Boulevard in Suffolk, Va.

    NORFOLK -- The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the city of Portsmouth will conduct joint aerial mosquito spraying between 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., Aug. 27, at federal properties on Craney Island, adjacent city properties and the north Churchland area (Route 164) in Portsmouth, Va.

    New York District launches a new website

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, has launched a refreshed public website on a new, cloud-based system. The system, which is part of a Corps-wide website overhaul, is designed to improve communication with stakeholders by increasing transparency and delivering fast, accessible, relevant information to the public.
  • NORFOLK – Roughly 40 district employees received an inspiring performance from Kate Campbell Stevenson who brought to life the lives of Abigail Adams, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Alice Paul, and other women suffragists through costumes and music for the district’s Women’s Equality Day celebration held here August 22, 2012. Introduced into legislation in 1971, Women’s Equality Day celebrates the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, giving women the right to vote. The amendment was certified August 26, 1920.

    The second and final phase of gate construction here kicked off Monday. The construction, a $7.6 million joint-venture project constructed by W.M. Jordan/Versar, Inc. and overseen by the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, will provide a new guardhouse and a 2,800 square-foot visitor center at the LaSalle Avenue gate.

Boulé, Commissioner of the National Parks of New York Harbor Maria Burks, Natural Resources Supervisor for the New York State Department of Conservation Steve Zahn and Assembly Member Alan Maisel to celebrate the Gerritsen Creek Ecosystem Restoration Project in Brooklyn’s Marine Park. The $8.3 million project was designed to ameliorate the adverse impacts of past filling activities and to create an improved ecosystem where plants and animals can thrive, and residents can better learn about their natural surroundings.
