    Norfolk District begins James River dredging

    NORFOLK, Va. – James River Federal Navigation Project engineers are ramping up efforts to minimize shoaling effects and improve safe navigation along Central Virginia’s winding watershed. Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Cottrell Contracting Corp. commenced maintenance dredging Sunday in the 7.6-mile Dancing Point-Swann Point channel.

    Leaders sign Norfolk Coastal Storm Risk Management design agreement

    NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk Coastal Storm Risk Management project just got another boost from city officials and Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Col. Patrick Kinsman, district commander, and City Manager Doug Smith signed the design agreement Friday, clearing a path for the Army and Norfolk to share costs in funding and developing full designs for the first construction feature.

    The Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works, the Honorable R.D. James, traveled to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Norfolk District on May 9 to meet with Virginia Port Authority leaders.

    Norfolk District, city to renourish Virginia Beach oceanfront

    The district has awarded the Virginia Beach Hurricane and Storm Damage Reduction Project renourishment contract to Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company of Oak Brook, Illinois. The bid of $22.64 million includes the placement of 1.85 million cubic yards of sand from 15th Street to 70th Street.
  • The North Landing Bridge, which spans the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway on the border of Chesapeake, Virginia and Virginia Beach, Virginia, handles approximately 11,000 vehicles per day under normal conditions. The bridge was damaged by two separate barge strikes, the first on March 1, 2016, the second on June 4, 2016.

    Norfolk District repairs to Chesapeake, Va.'s North Landing Bridge

    North Landing Bridge, which spans the Albemarle & Chesapeake Canal in Chesapeake, will temporarily close to vehicular traffic from 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 15 to 2 p.m. Friday, May 17 while the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers replaces an underwater electrical cable and makes other electrical and mechanical repairs to the bridge.

    Norfolk District contract award delivers boost to Lynnhaven Inlet navigation

    Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded a 120-day period of performance contract to Cottrell Contracting Corp. for the Lynnhaven Inlet Federal Navigation Project. The project serves commercial and recreational users in the city of Virginia Beach, the nonfederal sponsor, providing value to the both the economy and leisure opportunities.

    The survey vessel Ewell, a 61 foot catamaran outfitted with the latest multibeam SONAR technology and a crane capable of lifting 4,500 pounds, will serve as a dual-purpose vessel for the district, performing both as a survey vessel and marine debris removal vessel.

    Norfolk District prepares response teams, project sites for Hurricane Joaquin

    Ahead of Hurricane Joaquin, the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is taking the following measures to protect the health and safety of Virginians, and prevent flooding and damage at its military and civil work project sites throughout the commonwealth.

    A delegation of 22 environmentalists, government officials, scholars and environmental journalists from 20 different countries visited Poplar Island to better understand the methods of restoration and preservation used by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

    The Baltimore District and Maryland Port Administration hosted a delegation of 22 environmentalists, government officials and scholars from 20 different countries for a tour of the Paul S. Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration project at Poplar Island.
