    District of Columbia team that manages flood risks is recognized nationally

    A District of Columbia interagency team that manages flood risks, known as the DC Silver Jackets, was recognized as state team of the year during a national workshop in St. Louis, March 2, 2017. The DC Silver Jackets leverages resources to identify and implement comprehensive, resilient, and sustainable solutions to reduce flood risks around the flood-prone District. There are active Silver Jackets teams in 47 states, plus the District, and the program is sponsored by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

    Officials at the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have announced that the Dismal Swamp Canal will be closed indefinitely.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection are hosting a public meeting regarding the New Jersey Back Bays Flood Risk Management study on Dec. 1 from 6-8 p.m. at Stockton University in Galloway Township, N.J.

  • Corps of Engineers completes projects to manage stormwater at two Hyattsville elementary schools

    Baltimore District, in coordination with the Prince George’s County Department of the Environment, completed the construction of multiple projects to manage stormwater at both Ridgecrest Elementary and César Chávez Dual Spanish Immersion schools in Hyattsville, Maryland.

    Gathright Dam located in Alleghany County, Va., impounds the water flowing down the Jackson River to create the 2,500 acre Lake Moomaw. The dam has prevented numerous floods over its 30 plus year existence saving countless dollars and lives.

    Ahead of Hurricane Joaquin, the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is taking the following measures to protect the health and safety of Virginians, and prevent flooding and damage at its military and civil work project sites throughout the commonwealth.

    Norfolk District prepares response teams, project sites for Hurricane Joaquin

    Ahead of Hurricane Joaquin, the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is taking the following measures to protect the health and safety of Virginians, and prevent flooding and damage at its military and civil work project sites throughout the commonwealth.

    Blue Marsh Lake, located northwest of Reading in Berks County, Pennsylvania, was completed in 1979, creating a multipurpose project designed for flood control and water supply as well as recreation.

    Blue Marsh Lake Day Use Area to Re-Open

    With the reduction in lake level, the staff at Blue Marsh will open the Dry Brooks Day Use area and Church Road Access for day use activities on Saturday, May 3. Swimming at the beach area will be prohibited. Restroom facilities at both areas will be restricted to portable toilets only.

  • Blue Marsh Lake begins water releases

    May 2, 1014— Blue Marsh Lake recreation facilities have been closed to the public due to recent heavy rain and flood damage reduction actions. The lake level rose nearly five and a half feet higher than the normal summer pool. On the evening of May 1, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers determined the Schuylkill River could accept additional storm run-off and at 10 p.m., dam operators started taking actions to reduce water levels in the lake. The current release level from the dam is 2500 cubic feet per second. While this is not a major release, it is a significant amount of water.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Indian Rock Dam, York, Pa., has closed four roads surrounding Indian Rock Dam as part of normal emergency high water procedures due to current weather conditions.
