    ARLINGTON, Va. -- Randy Barton, an Arlington National Cemetery engineering technician, re-lights the Eternal Flame from the temporary flame at President John F. Kennedy's gravesite on May, 17, 2013 here. The flame has been undergoing repair and upgrade work, which includes installing newly designed burners, a new igniter and new gas and air lines.     New burner installed for Eternal Flame at the President John F. Kennedy gravesite

    ARLINGTON, Va. – The temporary flame that has been operating at the gravesite of President John F. Kennedy and his family since April 29 was removed today and the new burner at the Eternal Flame has been relit.
  • Six members of the Qatar Emiri Corps of Engineers visited Winchester, Va., this week for discussions with Middle East District leadership. Topics focused on the District’s mission, products and services, and technical capabilities. The delegation is also touring Fort Lee, Va., and Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., before heading back to Qatar.

    U.S., Qatar Corps of Engineers discuss partnership, collaborative assistance

    WINCHESTER, Va.-- The Qatar Emiri Corps of Engineers plans to improve its organization, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is in a good position to help. Three years ago, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, or USACE, Middle East District learned that the Qatar Emiri Corps of Engineers, or QECE, wanted to make improvements, and started discussions on potential support.

    The bosque, or forest, surrounding the Rio Grande River, is the longest continuous forest of cottonwood trees in the world. As signs of spring begin to show in the bosque, environmentalists, biologists and others continue their efforts to understand river flow issues along the Middle Rio Grande.

    For eroding island, engineers' efforts start with models

    Researchers are using wind, wave, turbidity data and more to understand the conditions in the Tangier Federal Navigation Channel and harbor. The resulting computer model will help determine what type and size of jetty will protect the waterway and harbor from wave attack, ultimately saving the local watermen tens of thousands of dollars in repair costs during storms.

    ERDC’s Field Research Facility deploys largest wave energy converter in U.S.

    DUCK, N.C.--The Engineer Research and Development Center's Field Research Facility in Duck, N.C., recently hosted Resolute Marine Energy for a full-scale test and evaluation of their surge wave energy converter (WEC). Resolute Marine Energy is a Boston, Mass.-based company developing technologies that produce clean energy from ocean waves.

    CAPE CHARLES, Va. -- Stakeholders work in breakout sessions with Norfolk District employees Oct. 12, 2012. The town wants to deepen their 18-foot navigation channel and approached the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for help.

    Town's need for deeper channel illustrates funding process

    The color-coded depth maps of the navigation channel lined each the top of table – each map in front of a stakeholder who wanted the same thing as the person in the next seat. The Corps of Engineers map wasn’t necessary for Chad Saunders. He knew the depths. And he knew what was needed. “My company needs more ... The town of Cape Charles needs more.”
  • As the Army's construction agent, the Corps of Engineers works with its customers to plan, program, budget, design and build facilities to achieve a minimum of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Silver or an equivalent overseas green building rating system certification per Army policy. USACE Europe District is piloting a Child Development Center project to see if it can earn a German rating system certification as an alternative to LEED.

  • USACE part of team working to put Passaic Valley treatment plant back in service

    BROOKLYN, New York – Under a Federal Emergency Management Administration mission assignment, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is working with the Passaic Valley Sewer Commission and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection to return the Passaic Valley Waste Water Treatment Plant to service. This critical facility, located near the Newark airport, serves 1.3 million households.

    Waterfield Building reopens Oct. 30

    The Norfolk District's Waterfield Building will open for normal operations Tuesday, Oct. 30. Liberal leave is authorized. High tide is expected at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning and may cause some localized flooding and travel concerns. Please time your commute appropriately.

    Gathright Dam located in Alleghany County, Va., impounds the water flowing down the Jackson River to create the 2,500 acre Lake Moomaw. The dam has prevented numerous floods over its 30 plus year existence saving countless dollars and lives.

    Gathright Dam ‘test pulse’ to increase Jackson River water flow

    State and federal agencies will use Gathright Dam near Covington, Va. to simulate a storm event on the Jackson River Oct. 3. The test pulse, conducted by the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, will begin at approximately 6 a.m. and peak at 3,500 cubic feet per second.

    NORFOLK – Roughly 40 district employees received an inspiring performance from Kate Campbell Stevenson who brought to life the lives of Abigail Adams, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Alice Paul, and other women suffragists through costumes and music for the district’s Women’s Equality Day celebration held here August 22, 2012. Introduced into legislation in 1971, Women’s Equality Day celebrates the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, giving women the right to vote. The amendment was certified August 26, 1920.

  • PORTSMOUTH, Va. -- More than 23 employees and family members from the Norfolk District participated in Clean the Bay Day June 2, 2012. Clean the Bay Day is a statewide initiative organized by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, in conjunction with municipalities, businesses and government agencies working together to restore the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers and streams. Every year since 1989, thousands of citizens throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia have dedicated their time to clear litter from waterways. Norfolk District employees volunteered three hours of their time today to remove debris from the shorelines of the Craney Island Dredged Material Management Area, which is operated and maintained by the district. CIDMMA is a 2,500-acre confined dredged material disposal site on the north side of Portsmouth, Va. It serves as an economical and environmentally sustainable repository for material dredged within the federal waterways of the Hampton Roads harbor.
