    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Philadelphia District repairs Reedy Point Bridge at the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal while accomodating scheduling needs of nearby Delaware City, DE.

    Reedy Point Bridge open for the winter

    Both lanes of the Reedy Point Bridge, a cantilever truss bridge that carries Delaware Route 9 over the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal, are now open to traffic. Except for a day or two of testing, in which case one lane will be closed, both lanes will remain open until the spring.

    Jennings Randolph Lake accepting Christmas Trees for recycling

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Jennings Randolph Lake will be accepting natural Christmas trees to use as fish structures in the lake beginning January 2, 2013. Instead of throwing away your trees, you now have the opportunity to donate it to a cause that will benefit shoreline fishing and overall fish habitat at Jennings Randolph Lake.

    CAPE CHARLES, Va. -- Stakeholders work in breakout sessions with Norfolk District employees Oct. 12, 2012. The town wants to deepen their 18-foot navigation channel and approached the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for help.

    The color-coded depth maps of the navigation channel lined each the top of table – each map in front of a stakeholder who wanted the same thing as the person in the next seat. The Corps of Engineers map wasn’t necessary for Chad Saunders. He knew the depths. And he knew what was needed. “My company needs more ... The town of Cape Charles needs more.”

    Waterfield Building reopens Oct. 30

    The Norfolk District's Waterfield Building will open for normal operations Tuesday, Oct. 30. Liberal leave is authorized. High tide is expected at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning and may cause some localized flooding and travel concerns. Please time your commute appropriately.

    Gathright Dam located in Alleghany County, Va., impounds the water flowing down the Jackson River to create the 2,500 acre Lake Moomaw. The dam has prevented numerous floods over its 30 plus year existence saving countless dollars and lives.

    Gathright Dam ‘test pulse’ to increase Jackson River water flow

    State and federal agencies will use Gathright Dam near Covington, Va. to simulate a storm event on the Jackson River Oct. 3. The test pulse, conducted by the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, will begin at approximately 6 a.m. and peak at 3,500 cubic feet per second.

    NORFOLK – Roughly 40 district employees received an inspiring performance from Kate Campbell Stevenson who brought to life the lives of Abigail Adams, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Alice Paul, and other women suffragists through costumes and music for the district’s Women’s Equality Day celebration held here August 22, 2012. Introduced into legislation in 1971, Women’s Equality Day celebrates the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, giving women the right to vote. The amendment was certified August 26, 1920.

  • PORTSMOUTH, Va. -- More than 23 employees and family members from the Norfolk District participated in Clean the Bay Day June 2, 2012. Clean the Bay Day is a statewide initiative organized by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, in conjunction with municipalities, businesses and government agencies working together to restore the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers and streams. Every year since 1989, thousands of citizens throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia have dedicated their time to clear litter from waterways. Norfolk District employees volunteered three hours of their time today to remove debris from the shorelines of the Craney Island Dredged Material Management Area, which is operated and maintained by the district. CIDMMA is a 2,500-acre confined dredged material disposal site on the north side of Portsmouth, Va. It serves as an economical and environmentally sustainable repository for material dredged within the federal waterways of the Hampton Roads harbor.

    U.S. Army Corps of Engineers park rangers and volunteers will be working this summer season to increase visitor's awareness of the importance of practicing safe and sensible recreation activities in and around Army Corps waters.

William Brewer, PVT2 Colton Young, show off their new America the Beautiful Passes given to them as part of the new pass program for all active military, May 5, 2012. The pass allows all military and their families to go to federal parks for free and is good for more than 2,000 federal recreation sites nationwide. The pass program is part of the first lady’s Joining Forces initiative to unite society in support of military members and their families.

    USACE announced it will accept the federal recreation pass program's military pass at its more than 2,500 recreation areas nationwide.

    Corps’ New England District suspends nationwide

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has reissued its Nationwide Permits (NWPs), authorizing work in streams, wetlands and other waters of the United States under Section 404 of the Clean Water Act and Section 10 of the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1899. The new NWPs took effect March 19, 2012 replacing the existing 2007 NWPs.
