    Work paused for safety stand-down, highlighting fall prevention

    Falls are the leading cause of death in the construction industry so each year, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration asks employers in the construction industry to participate in the voluntary National Fall Prevention Stand-Down. This year’s National Safety Stand-Down, which raises awareness of preventing fall hazards, is May 4-15. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Middle East District asked contractors on each project to set aside some time to pause their work and conduct a focused safety talk on ladder safety, scaffold safety or other fall protection topics.

    The hopper dredge B. E. Lindholm from Weeks Marine Inc., was called in to dredge when hazardous shoaling in the Thimble Shoals federal navigation channel was discovered and one side of the navigation lane was closed.

    Corps responds to emergency dredging in Thimble Shoals federal channel

    NORFOLK – Hazardous shoaling in the Thimble Shoals federal navigation channel launched action between local and federal agencies as they raced to reopen a closed navigation lane. The Virginia Pilots Association alerted the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, of the hazard on March 13, and within hours, a survey team was mobilized.

    Jeff Ice, a safety and occupational health specialist who deployed to Kandahar from the USACE New York District shows an Afghan construction worker how to detect a fake fire extinguisher. Some counterfeit ones, instead of releasing the normal fire-stopping agent they are supposed to release, spit out flour or other non-effective substances.

    KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan -- Throughout the Afghanistan Engineer District-South area of operations, where dozens of Afghan National Security Forces installations are under construction, safety and occupational health specialists visit job sites daily to make sure laborers are protected from unnecessary risks.

    PORTSMOUTH Va. – Col. Paul Olsen presents Jorel Nadal, a district safety and health specialist, with the pen he used to sign the Voluntary Protection Program Commitment Statement affirming the district’s support to participate in the safety program at the Craney Island Dredge Material Management Area here. Nadal worked to get the program off the ground at the facility, which will make the area safer for employees through extensive documentation and modeling, which identifies problematic areas; giving employers the chance to see trends and correct deficiencies.

    District one step closer to being accepted into OSHA program

    The Voluntary Protection Program uses performance-based criteria and requires extensive documentation in order to be in compliance. The program uses different models and tools to try and identify problematic areas so agencies can attempt to minimize and eliminate as many accidents as possible.
