    Illness leads to unexpected friendship for office engineer in Romania

    Sandy Higgins, a member of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Europe District’s Romania Missile Defense Agency Resident Office working on the Aegis Ashore project at Naval Support Facility Deveselu, came down with a severe bout of pneumonia this past spring. The long recovery took her into the home of a Romanian husband-and-wife doctor team, who nursed her back to health. A strong personal bond emerged.

    KUCOVE, Albania – U.S. and Albanian leaders joined students, faculty and parents June 11 to celebrate the reopening of a local school here. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Europe District managed a $575,000 renovation in support of U.S. Embassy Tirana’s Office of Defense Cooperation and U.S. European Command’s humanitarian-assistance program.

    Students share STEM ambitions with USACE

    U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Europe District personnel hosted the STEM Essay Contest winners from Wiesbaden and Sembach middle schools Thursday at the Amelia Earhart Center in Wiesbaden, Germany. The first-place winners from the sixth, seventh and eighth grades participated in a day of hands-on activities, presentations, a mock ribbon-cutting ceremony and construction-site scavenger hunt.

  • USACE bolsters European reassurance effort

    U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Europe District will manage more construction in Eastern and Central Europe this year than it has in the past 40 years combined. Over the next three years, the district will execute up to 145 military construction and facilities sustainment, restoration and modernization projects in Poland, the Baltics and Balkans as part of the $1 billion European Reassurance Initiative to support NATO allies and U.S. partners in the region.

    WIESBADEN, Germany – The remaining military members on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers team sent to Liberia for Operation United Assistance made it back to Germany earlier this month, just as the West African nation was declared Ebola-free. The Europe District contingent assisted with treatment center construction and helped sustain a DOD presence that numbered 2,800 personnel at its peak.

    Europe District boosts array of partners, programs

    WIESBADEN, Germany – More than ever before, the U.S. and its allies throughout Europe, Africa and Israel called upon Europe District in 2014 for architect, engineering, construction, environmental, and operations and maintenance support. USACE had record-high quality construction placement in excess of $610 million across the district in all programs ranging from Belgium to Israel, the Baltics to the Balkans, Eastern Europe to Africa, and at remote sites on both continents and Eurasia.

  • The North Atlantic Coast Comprehensive Study's goals are to 1) Provide risk reduction strategies—reduce risk to which vulnerable coastal populations are subject 2) Promote coastal resilient communities—ensure a sustainable and robust coastal landscape system—considering future sea level rise and climate change scenarios—to reduce risk to vulnerable population, property, ecosystems, and infrastructure. The $19.5 million Comprehensive Study is due to congress in January 2015.     The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers today released to the public a report detailing the results of a two-year study to address coastal storm and flood risk to vulnerable populations, property, ecosystems, and infrastructure in the North Atlantic region of the United States affected by Hurricane Sandy in October, 2012.

    MONS, Belgium – Top military and civilian leaders from Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, the Department of Defense Education Activity and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officially dedicated the U.S. sections Monday during a ribbon-cutting ceremony at SHAPE International School. The new Department of Defense Dependents Schools-Europe elementary and middle schools – to be followed by an American high school this coming winter – are the first to open as part of a multinational-funded venture to build a state-of-the-art campus on this NATO base by the fall of 2019.

    Army Corps continues progress on Hurricane Sandy recovery

    Together with its federal, state, local and industry partners, the Army Corps' North Atlantic Division, which extends from Virginia to Maine, has completed 66 coastal storm damage risk reduction projects, including repairs on 46 Sandy-damaged navigation channels and structures and restoration of 20 engineered beach projects along the coast.

    Jeffrey McMaster, resident engineer at the Fort Detrick Area Office, received the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District, Hero of the Year award from District Engineer and Commander Col. Trey Jordan at a Sept. 16 ceremony. He earned the District award for his poise and professionalism following the August 2013 laboratory fire at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases replacement project. He provided accurate and timely reporting to Corps leaders in the aftermath of the incident.
