    Going big: district tackles oysters, Lynnhaven

    Contractors for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are moving mountains of fossil oyster shell from Craney Island in Portsmouth, Va., to build 16 acres of sanctuary reefs in Elizabeth River and some of its tributaries, while the work to bring environmental restoration on the Lynnhaven River is ongoing.

    Craney Island’s oyster mitigation project set for summer launch

    Oysters are expanding their real estate in the Elizabeth River and Hoffler Creek this summer, thanks to a USACE, VPA partnership to construct 16 acres of oyster reef, part of the Craney Island Eastward Expansion project.

    PORTSMOUTH Va. – Col. Paul Olsen presents Jorel Nadal, a district safety and health specialist, with the pen he used to sign the Voluntary Protection Program Commitment Statement affirming the district’s support to participate in the safety program at the Craney Island Dredge Material Management Area here. Nadal worked to get the program off the ground at the facility, which will make the area safer for employees through extensive documentation and modeling, which identifies problematic areas; giving employers the chance to see trends and correct deficiencies.

    District one step closer to being accepted into OSHA program

    The Voluntary Protection Program uses performance-based criteria and requires extensive documentation in order to be in compliance. The program uses different models and tools to try and identify problematic areas so agencies can attempt to minimize and eliminate as many accidents as possible.

    Jerry Bridges, Port of Virginia's executive director, and Col. Paul Olsen, Norfolk District commander, sign a Project Partnership Agreement this afternoon for the Craney Island Eastward Expansion project. This Corps-VPA partnership will have significant impacts on the local, regional, and national economy, doubling the capacity of the Port and generating more than 56,000 jobs over time.

  • PORTSMOUTH, Va. -- More than 23 employees and family members from the Norfolk District participated in Clean the Bay Day June 2, 2012. Clean the Bay Day is a statewide initiative organized by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, in conjunction with municipalities, businesses and government agencies working together to restore the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers and streams. Every year since 1989, thousands of citizens throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia have dedicated their time to clear litter from waterways. Norfolk District employees volunteered three hours of their time today to remove debris from the shorelines of the Craney Island Dredged Material Management Area, which is operated and maintained by the district. CIDMMA is a 2,500-acre confined dredged material disposal site on the north side of Portsmouth, Va. It serves as an economical and environmentally sustainable repository for material dredged within the federal waterways of the Hampton Roads harbor.
