    Army Corps Vessel Participates in Parade of Ships

    NEW YORK-The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Drift Collection Vessel HAYWARD sailed alongside the wedge of U.S. Navy and Canadian surface combatants, Military Sealift ships, and U.S. Coast Guard vessels in the parade of ships that entered New York Harbor May 23rd to participate in Fleet Week 2018, a week-long event celebrating the maritime services. The ships transited the Anchorage Channel and sailed under the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge mid-morning as onlookers lined the shores of Staten Island and Brooklyn, N.Y. and welcomed the fleet.

    Army Corps sparks STEM interest at Intrepid Museum event

    It was a foggy and rainy day outside, but inside the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum things were buzzing for “Kids Week” a series of events conducted during the last week of February 2018. The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is a maritime history museum at Pier 86 at 46th Street on the West Side of Manhattan, New York City. The U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Intrepid was one of 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers built during World War II. The ship was decommissioned in 1974 and in 1982 became the foundation of the museum.

    Army Corps hosts Joint Armed Forces ribbon cutting ceremony at the Times Square Recruiting Center

    On November 10th, 2017 a contingent of joint armed forces recruiting commands joined the Army Corps’ New York District and the North Atlantic Division for a ribbon cutting ceremony at the U.S. Armed Forces Recruiting Center at Times Square. The ribbon was cut by a joint service group of commanders that included Major General Garrett Harencak, Commander, Air Force Recruiting Service, Lieutenant Colonel Judd Floris, Commander, NYC Army Recruiting Battalion, Colonel Ivan Monclova, Commander, 1st Marine Corp District, Colonel Robert Hailey, Acting Deputy Commander, North Atlantic Division, and Commander Christian Gaskill, Commander, Navy Recruiting District New York.

    CAMDEN COUNTY, N.C. -- The Dismal Swamp Canal offers boaters a tranquil and serene trip down the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. On average, more than 700 boaters utilize the canal between the months of September and December.

    Officials at the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have delayed reopening the Dismal Swamp Canal until late October. “Recent weather events have delayed progress, and the latest condition survey of Turners Cut showed that additional dredging was needed,” said Keith Lockwood, Norfolk District Operations Branch chief.

The Restoration Advisory Board meeting; which will take place at the Courtyard Marriott, located at 8060 Harbour View Blvd. in Suffolk from 6:15 to 8:15 p.m.; will feature discussions regarding the latest cleanup progress.

    SUFFOLK, Va. -- A munition uncovered by contractors lays on the ground at the Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot on Dec. 2, 2005. In 1987 the Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot became a matter of public concern when a piece of crystalline TNT was found at the Tidewater Community College, Portsmouth Campus. Extensive historical research, investigations, and testing led the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to place this site on the National Priority list in 1999.     Gathright Dam located in Alleghany County, Va., impounds the water flowing down the Jackson River to create the 2,500 acre Lake Moomaw. The dam has prevented numerous floods over its 30 plus year existence saving countless dollars and lives.

    Gathright Dam continues controlled flood release, operators to reduce release rate

    Gathright Dam near Covington, Virginia continues a controlled flood storage release today. Beginning this morning at 9 a.m., operators at the dam will begin to reduce the release, which is currently at 3,480 cubic feet per second, to 1,600 cubic feet per second by 1 p.m.

    President’s budget includes $27.9M for Virginia civil works projects

    President Obama’s proposed Fiscal Year 2016 budget transmitted to Congress includes $4.732 billion in gross discretionary funding for the civil works program of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Of that sum, the budget provides $27,968,000 for a variety of Norfolk District projects, including $800,000 to study the deepening of the Norfolk Harbor Channel to 55 feet.

    Col. Paul Olsen, Norfolk District commander, signs the environmental permit authorizing Henry County, Va., to develop two facilities at the Commonwealth Crossing Business Center. The project required a federal permit under Section 404 of the Clean Water Act. The permit allows the county to provide infrastructure, transportation and pad site improvements and authorizes mitigation of the impacts to wetlands and streams in the area.

    The Norfolk District authorized the environmental permit to develop the Commonwealth Crossing Business Center in Henry County, Va. here today. The Henry County Industrial Development Authority agreed to the proffered permit sent by Norfolk District last week, which allowed Col. Paul Olsen, Norfolk District commander, to finalize and authorize the permit.

    Army Corps, NYC Parks, National Park Service, beginning coastal storm risk reduction work at Plumb Beach

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, working in partnership with the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation and the National Park Service, will manage the placement of sand along eroded portions of Plumb Beach in Brooklyn today as part of the first phase of coastal storm risk reduction work.

    Col. Paul Owen takes command of New York Engineer District

    Colonel Paul Owen assumed command of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, during a formal change of command ceremony on September 14, 2012. Colonel John R. Boulé, who commanded the district since July 2009, relinquished command during the event in the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House. A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Colonel Owen graduated in 1990 from the United States Military Academy at West Point with a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering.

    New York District launches a new website

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, has launched a refreshed public website on a new, cloud-based system. The system, which is part of a Corps-wide website overhaul, is designed to improve communication with stakeholders by increasing transparency and delivering fast, accessible, relevant information to the public.
