    Norfolk District repairs to Chesapeake, Va.'s North Landing Bridge

    North Landing Bridge, which spans the Albemarle & Chesapeake Canal in Chesapeake, will temporarily close to vehicular traffic from 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 15 to 2 p.m. Friday, May 17 while the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers replaces an underwater electrical cable and makes other electrical and mechanical repairs to the bridge.

    NORFOLK, Va. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is modifying North Landing Bridge's navigation openings to two a day Monday through Friday at 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. while ongoing repairs to the bridge are completed. These openings could last up to an hour, and motorists should plan accordingly.

    Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded a 120-day period of performance contract to Cottrell Contracting Corp. for the Lynnhaven Inlet Federal Navigation Project. The project serves commercial and recreational users in the city of Virginia Beach, the nonfederal sponsor, providing value to the both the economy and leisure opportunities.
  • Steve England and Jake Helminiak of the USACE Philadelphia District traveled to the Kingdom of Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) to participate in workshops, field visits, and to share their expertise with government officials. During the visit, the group met with hydrologists and field technicians from the Department of Water Affairs. They visited multiple dams, gaging stations, and a local agricultural water impoundment.

    Two USACE hydraulic engineers traveled to Africa in mid-March to share their expertise on a variety of groundwater-related issues. Steve England and Jake Helminiak of the USACE Philadelphia District traveled to the Kingdom of Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) to participate in workshops, field visits, and to share their expertise with government officials.

    In the Little Theater at the Westchester County Center in White Plains New York, about 150 people gathered to learn more about the New York & New Jersey Harbors and Tributaries study (NYNJHATS). The study is a component of the North Atlantic Coast Comprehensive Study that was completed by the US Army Corps of Engineers, North Atlantic Division. Both studies will address coastal storm and flood risk to vulnerable populations, property, ecosystems, and infrastructure affected by Hurricane Sandy in the United States' North Atlantic region.

    West Hill Dam team, bird watchers participate in bird counting event

    Local bird watchers descended upon West Hill Dam armed with pen, paper and a few binoculars to participate in West Hill Dam’s annual Backyard Bird Count. The event took place Feb. 17 and was co-hosted by the Cornell University Lab of Ornithology. The organization has been hosting the count at District project for 20 years.
