    ERDC Soldiers serve in the fight against COVID-19

    Although the vast majority of employees with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) are Department of Defense civilians, the select few U.S. Army Soldiers assigned to the ERDC are making a significant impact during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since March 2020, Soldiers from across the ERDC have deployed around the country to aid in the fight against the disease, many mobilizing to “hotspots” to confront the unique challenges of fighting an unseen enemy.

    Virtual public meetings set for Miami-Dade Back Bay study

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Miami-Dade County, its non-federal sponsor, will host a pair of online public meetings this month on the Miami-Dade Back Bay Coastal Storm Risk Management Feasibility Study. The public is invited to learn more about the study and its findings at the identical virtual sessions, scheduled for 5-7 p.m. June 9 and 1-3 p.m. June 11. USACE staff will be available to answer questions.
  • Gathright Dam in Alleghany County, Virginia, impounds water flowing down the Jackson River to create the 2,500-acre Lake Moomaw. Since opening in 1979, the dam has prevented numerous floods, saving countless dollars and lives.

    A look back: Nadler's 40 years of service

    Ensley Engineer Yard (EEY) Pipefitter Guy Nadler recently celebrated 40 years of federal service with 20 of them being with the Memphis District. Nadler started his exciting career with the government in 1978 when he joined the U.S. Air Force. He attended Basic Training and Technical School before going into the security police career field in Italy.

  • The completed alternate care facilty at Kalispell, Mont., has 98 patient care rooms, seven nurse’s stations, four restrooms, three pharmacies (which can be converted into patient care rooms) and a medical supply storage room.

    Future leaders during COVID-19

    The Memphis District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is known for executing many different tasks, projects and missions all at the same time. Even when COVID-19 presented itself, this district didn’t stop doing everything it’s normally charged to do. Like many other organizations around the world, the Coronavirus altered how some projects were carried out within the district; this included how the Leadership Development Program (LDP) continued on as well.

    A look back: Marshall’s 40 years of service

    “First and foremost, what inspired me was the veterans,” Marshall said. “While serving as a purchasing agent in the Prosthetics Department of the VA, I enjoyed helping the veterans get the products, medicines, home alterations, and equipment they needed. Providing equipment for the blind and handicapped, and seeing their appreciation for the small things filled my heart with joy.  I enjoyed having input in the selection of the equipment provided, and enjoyed informing them of products or services they were unaware that they may have qualified for.”  Contract Specialist Valerie Marshall recently celebrated 40 years of federal service, so we decided to step back and take a look at how she spent those years, as we are very grateful for her service to the Memphis District as well as to this nation.

    A 25-year employee of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District, was awarded the Omaha-Lincoln Federal Executive Association 2019, Federal Employee Leadership Award in the Managerial/Supervisor/Leader of the Year category.

U.S. Army Installation Management Command garrisons are more efficient and effective at management, tracking, and reporting of hazardous materials thanks to the Environmental, Safety and Occupational Health – Management Information System implementation team of Huntsville Center’s Environmental and Munitions Center of Expertise.

    Huntsville Center improves hazardous materials management

    Previously, many installations used other more costly user licenses, such as the Hazardous Materials Management System, or other commercial databases that required annual renewal fees to manage their HM or HW data. Licensing costs were greatly reduced with the single EESOH-MIS application.

    Answering the Call

    In late March 2020, Army 1st Lt. Eoghan Matthews, a Soldier assigned to the U.S. Army Engineering Research and Development Center’s (ERDC) Cold Region Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL), received a call. The instructions were cryptic but direct: “Pack a bag, and be ready to go somewhere in the Northeast.”

    Burress named Nashville District Employee of the Month for April 2020

    Burress is being recognized for his outstanding performance supporting the Nashville District during the COVID-19 pandemic. His efforts to keep staff informed and safe have been instrumental in ensuring operations continued in as safe a manner as possible.

    Trust, commitment and partnerships underpin FUDS foundation

    More than 10,000 former Department of Defense properties within the U.S and its territories have been identified as potentially posing some degree of risk to humans or the environment. The sites range in size from as small as a football field to an area as large as New York City. Fortunately, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District and its partner agencies are committed to discovering and removing hazardous remnants of past military activities before anyone else.

The ERDC model, also referred to as the ERDC-SEIR (Susceptible Exposed Infected Recovered) model, is one of 16 models featured on the CDC’s COVID-19 model ensemble website.

    The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, awarded a contract for more than $2.9 million to Gloucester-based Coastal Design & Construction Inc. to construct an approximately 685-foot-long stone jetty at the entrance of the Tangier Island Federal Navigation Channel, located on the western side of the island.

    Memorial Day: Remembering Memphis District employees who made the ultimate sacrifice

    Today is Memorial Day. For 152 years, America has set aside a day to pay tribute to our Patriots who gave their last full measure of devotion for this country. This Memorial Day, we remember three Memphis District employees who were among the 405,399 who made the ultimate sacrifice while fighting in World War II. 1st Lt. Reeves S. Carper, 2nd Lt. John F. McIntyre, and 1st Lt. Arch R. Ponder left their jobs, co-workers, families, and friends here in Memphis to train and travel overseas to join the fight.

    Baltimore is historically a port city with a rich maritime history and the Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District’s navigation mission plays a large part in that continued heritage. While the District maintains over 290 miles of federal navigable channels within the Susquehanna River watershed through its navigation mission, support to the Port of Baltimore is a key aspect of that mission.
