    Army Corps shares update on Indian River Inlet repairs

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia District awarded a contract to Agate Construction Co., Inc. of Egg Harbor Township, N.J. for $5.3 million to repair a portion of bulkhead and to sand-tighten a portion of the south jetty at Indian River Inlet in Sussex County, DE. Work is anticipated to begin in Spring 2024.

    USACE awards contract to Virginia company to construct jetty at Tangier

    The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, awarded a contract for more than $2.9 million to Gloucester-based Coastal Design & Construction Inc. to construct an approximately 685-foot-long stone jetty at the entrance of the Tangier Island Federal Navigation Channel, located on the western side of the island.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Maryland Department of Natural Resources, and Worcester County signed a Project Partnership Agreement Feb. 14 to start work on a navigation improvement project to address sediment accumulation, or shoaling, within the Ocean City Inlet.

    Baltimore District receives more than $13 million in additional funding for navigation, environmental restoration, flood risk management missions in Chesapeake Bay region

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District, received more than $13 million in additional funding in the 2019 Work Plan to continue various critical missions in the Chesapeake Bay watershed, including Mid-Bay Island design, the Chesapeake Bay Comprehensive Plan, Fishing Creek jetty repairs, Ocean City Inlet dredging, and operation and maintenance activities at dams to include construction of a new water treatment plant at Raystown Lake.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District, awarded a contract Sept. 29, 2017, to Coastal Design & Construction Inc., a small business out of Gloucester, Virginia, in the amount of approximately $6.88 million for construction of a navigation improvement project at Rhodes Point on Smith Island, in collaboration with Maryland Department of Natural Resources and Somerset County.

    Bay islanders receive status update on needed jetty

    In front of a mostly packed house in Tangier Island’s combined-school cafeteria, a panel of Norfolk District leaders, engineers and scientists briefed the community on progress of the jetty project.

    District reassures islanders of its commitment to them

    A cadre of Norfolk District leaders and staff, accompanied by Deborah Christie with Congressman Scott Rigell’s office, journeyed by boat 14 miles in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay Monday to reaffirm their commitment to assisting in Tangier Island's subsistence and erosion issues.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, has awarded two contracts to repair navigation projects in Nassau County totaling approximately $13.5 million.

    For eroding island, engineers' efforts start with models

    Researchers are using wind, wave, turbidity data and more to understand the conditions in the Tangier Federal Navigation Channel and harbor. The resulting computer model will help determine what type and size of jetty will protect the waterway and harbor from wave attack, ultimately saving the local watermen tens of thousands of dollars in repair costs during storms.

    A team of engineers and researchers with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Engineering Research and Development Center, Coastal Hydraulics Laboratory in Vicksburg, Miss., is gathering wind data on Tangier Island, an island in the Chesapeake Bay that is sinking and eroding away, especially when strong winds churn storm waters.

    Survey crews to start work on Tangier Jetty

    Physical work on the feasibility phase of the Tangier Jetty program is set to begin this week, weather dependant. A Norfolk District survey crew will operate in the water where the jetty is to be built at the federal navigation channel entranceway on the western side of the island.
