    Synergy for safety: ERDC partners with local fire department for increased protection

    When it comes to emergency response, it’s said that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. For the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) and the City of Vicksburg Fire Department (VFD), the old adage is more than just a saying, it’s a blueprint for success. Until the mid-1990s, ERDC was home to its own fire department on the Waterways Experiment Station. After that, fire protection was transferred over to the City of Vicksburg.

    USACE supports storm survivors with safe structures

    Responding to disasters is one of several missions the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is tasked with. Part of answering this call is through specialized teams that go out and conduct infrastructure assessments in disaster areas. "On Aug. 29, the Corps of Engineers and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) deployed an Infrastructure Assessment Planning and Response Team (PRT) management cell to Louisiana," Infrastructure Assessment Action Officer Doug Weber said. "When I first started on the Infrastructure Assessment team, I thought it was all about placarding peoples’ homes for safety, " Mission Specialist Adrienne Murphy said. "But in our last two deployments, we’ve been asked to perform inspections of drinking water systems, wastewater systems, and public facilities like hospitals and fire stations."

The display is used to remind workers of the importance of preventing falls in the construction industry. The Sacramento District maintenance yard, located in the West Sacramento community of Bryte, is home to the team of craftsmen with skills in vessel and heavy equipment operation, carpentry, electrical, pipefitting, plumbing, metal fabrication, welding. The Bryte Yard Team will be participation in the virtual 7th Annual Safety Stand-Down set for Sept. 14 -18.

    Gathright Dam Stakeholders Meeting

    On November 2, 2017, Col. Jason Kelly, along with several key members of the Norfolk District, met with stakeholders, partners, and local citizens concerning flood control, low flow augmentation, recreation, and hydropower. Nestled in the hills of Covington, Virginia stakeholders were taken on a tour of Gathright Dam, which was immediately followed by an in-depth discussion on Gathright Dam. Several of the key speakers included: Col. Jason Kelly, Raymond Dridge, Matthew McKeehan, Anthony Lockridge, Alicia Farrow, Robin Williams, and Owen Reece. Also contributing to the discussion were representatives from the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF) and Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). Attached are the slides and information from that meeting.

Thirteen contest winners of Archer Western Contractor’s poster contest toured the site currently under construction at Fort Stewart, Georgia. Diamond students from kindergarten through sixth-grade submitted posters emphasizing safety themes in recognition of Safety Week celebrated May 2-6.
