    Norfolk beach expansion combats sea-level rise

    Mayor Paul Fraim and other city of Norfolk leaders joined Col. Paul Olsen, Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers commander, along Ocean View Beach to sign a historic project partnership agreement that lays the foundation for construction of a coastal storm damage reduction project.

    Coastal engineers expect that large storms will induce sediment transport from the nourished beach and move sand offshore. When this happens, waves begin to break farther from the shoreline, thus weakening their force before they reach the shoreline itself. In this way, beach nourishment projects help protect dunes and property from further erosion, decrease flooding, and limit how far ashore storm surge will go. A wide, flat beach berm with a sufficient volume of sand keeps the erosive power of the waves from reaching and destroying the dunes and structures and can reduce damages significantly from waves, inundation, and erosion. Without beach nourishment, the starting point for damage would be farther onshore; a nourished beach, with sufficient sand volume and healthy dunes, absorbs the storm's energy, even during slow-moving storms, and helps prevent damages to structures and infrastructure.

    Although a lot of engineering goes into planning, designing, and constructing hard structures such as levees, walls, tidal barriers, and pump stations, engineering is crucial to building and replenishing beaches, as well.

    The North Atlantic Coast Comprehensive Study's goals are to 1) Provide risk reduction strategies—reduce risk to which vulnerable coastal populations are subject 2) Promote coastal resilient communities—ensure a sustainable and robust coastal landscape system—considering future sea level rise and climate change scenarios—to reduce risk to vulnerable population, property, ecosystems, and infrastructure. The $19.5 million Comprehensive Study is due to congress in January 2015. The final study will include a coastal framework as well as storm suite modeling, coastal GIS analysis, and related evaluations, for the affected coastlines. (U.S. Army graphic)

    USACE releases report on coastal storm, flood risk in North Atlantic region

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers today released to the public a report detailing the results of a two-year study to address coastal storm and flood risk to vulnerable populations, property, ecosystems, and infrastructure in the North Atlantic region of the United States affected by Hurricane Sandy in October, 2012.

    District reassures islanders of its commitment to them

    A cadre of Norfolk District leaders and staff, accompanied by Deborah Christie with Congressman Scott Rigell’s office, journeyed by boat 14 miles in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay Monday to reaffirm their commitment to assisting in Tangier Island's subsistence and erosion issues.
