    New York District Vessel Participates in Parade of Ships

    NEW YORK-The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Drift Collection Vessel HAYWARD sailed alongside the wedge of U.S. Navy and Canadian surface combatants, Military Sealift ships, and U.S. Coast Guard vessels in the parade of ships that entered New York Harbor May 23rd to participate in Fleet Week 2018, a week-long event celebrating the maritime services. The ships transited the Anchorage Channel and sailed under the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge mid-morning as onlookers lined the shores of Staten Island and Brooklyn, N.Y. and welcomed the fleet.

    New York District sparks STEM interest at Intrepid Museum event

    It was a foggy and rainy day outside, but inside the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum things were buzzing for “Kids Week” a series of events conducted during the last week of February 2018. The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is a maritime history museum at Pier 86 at 46th Street on the West Side of Manhattan, New York City. The U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Intrepid was one of 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers built during World War II. The ship was decommissioned in 1974 and in 1982 became the foundation of the museum.

    Army Corps Participates in Estuary Day Celebration and STEM Event

    On an unseasonably warm day in October, an alliance of partners with the support of local elected officials conveyed an important initiative to hundreds of Elizabeth, NJ school students. Let’s work together to take care of our environment. The Estuary Day event took place near the Elizabeth River at the Peterstown Community Center in Elizabeth, New Jersey, students arrived to partake in a day of educational workshops and interactive exhibits made by their peers from competing High Schools. Future City Inc., organized the event, and representatives from over 20 organizations joined in the festivities. The program demonstrated the importance of education and community participation in preserving and appreciating the environment.

    Long Beach is a city in Nassau County, New York located along Long Island's South Shore. As whipping cold winds howl along its shore, Army Corps Contracting Rep. Michael Ortega and project engineer Janeen Minguillo travel in a four-wheel-drive truck and ascend over newly excavated sand making their daily rounds surveying sand levels.
