Jennings Randolph Lakes accepting Christmas trees for recycling

Published Dec. 11, 2013

Jennings Randolph Lake, W. Va. - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Jennings Randolph Lake will be accepting natural Christmas trees to use as fish structures in the lake beginning Dec. 30.  Instead of throwing away your trees, you now have the opportunity to donate it to a cause that will benefit shoreline fishing and overall fish habitat at Jennings Randolph Lake.

“Last year the program was a huge success and we managed to put over fifty bundles of fish structure totaling over one hundred Christmas trees in the lake,” said Corps Park Ranger Tom Craig.  “We are hoping to have even more success with the program this year now with two separate Christmas tree drop off locations.  The trees are beneficial to aquatic insects, which are essential food for most species.”

A trailer will be located at the entrance to the West Virginia Overlook gate at Jennings Randolph Lake approximately two miles past the park entrance off Route 46.  Tree drop off is scheduled from Jan. 6-31, 2014, Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

A second drop off area will be located at the Elk District Volunteer Fire Hall near their message board in front of the entrance.  Please leave your trees on the grass near the message board and not on the roadway in front of the bays for the fire trucks.  This drop off area will be available seven days a week from sunrise to sunset.

Please remove all decorations including tinsel, ornaments, lights, garland, and any other items used to decorate your tree prior to drop-off.  Artificial trees will not be accepted because they are not of organic nature and could be hazardous to the fish and aquatic habitat.
