A new deputy commander joined the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers North Atlantic Division July 14. Col. Donald Degidio, a native of Providence, R.I., came to the division from the Republic of Korea where he served as the commander of the Army Corps’ Far East District, responsible for the largest construction program managed by the U.S. Army, valued at more than $11 billion.
The North Atlantic Division, headquartered in Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn, N.Y., is one of nine regions of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It is the Corps’ headquarters for the Northeastern United States, Europe, and Africa, with offices in Concord, Mass., New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Norfolk and Wiesbaden, Germany. Most recently, the Division, an organization of about 3,500 military and civilian employees, led the Army Corps' response to Hurricane Sandy, which included unwatering 475 million gallons of salt water from the New York City metro area and providing emergency temporary power to critical public infrastructure affected by the storm. Currently, the division is overseeing a large number of projects to reduce the region's vulnerability to future coastal storms.
Prior to his position at the Corps' Far East District, Degidio served as the Installation Management Command’s Deputy Region Commander for Transformation in the Republic of Korea. Colonel Degidio has also commanded or been a staff officer for units in Afghanistan, Fort Bragg, N.C., Fort Polk, LA; Alexandria, VA; Washington, DC; and Schofield Barracks, HI.
