NEW YORK – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, recently awarded a contract for $10,340,523 to Intercontinental Construction Contracting Inc., of Passaic, New Jersey, for the construction of a new columbarium or cremation-only structure at the St. Albans Columbarium in Queens, New York for the Department of Veterans Affairs, National Cemetery Administration.
The administration is bringing burial options closer to Veterans and their families by developing columbarium-only sites in several urban areas across the country, including New York. A columbarium is a structure with niches for cremation funeral urns to be stored.
New York District Commander Col. Matthew W. Luzzatto stated: “Awarding this contract is one way our District can honor the men and women Veterans and their families that have sacrificed for this country. I would like to thank our partner, the National Cemetery Administration, for looking to us to perform this honorable work.”
Construction of a new columbarium at the St. Albans Columbarium will first include removal of an existing building and its foundation and utilities.
The new columbarium facility will then be constructed and will include an administrative building, committal service shelter, other columbarium structures, memorial walls, and an ossuary.
In addition, the new structure will include utilities, landscaping, drainage and irrigation systems, parking space and paving, automatic access gates, fencing, a camera surveillance system and security system, flag poles, and flag sleeves.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District will lead the construction efforts in concert with the National Cemetery Administration. Work is estimated to begin in October 2021.
