Westhampton Beach Interim Project Complete
A long pipe spans the coastline at Westhampton Beach, New York, November 21, 2014. The pipe transports a sand and water mixture to shore from an offshore dredge and is then distributed by bulldozers, helping repair severe erosion caused by Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, placed nearly 1 million cubic yards of sand for the Westhampton Beach Interim Project providing coastal storm risk reduction for nearly 4 miles of shoreline from Westhampton Beach to Cupsogue Beach County Park on Long Island’s south shore. Work included berm and dune restoration, tapering an existing groin, and constructing a new groin. The project was completed in late 2014.
