    The Bridge Inspection & Evaluation Center of Expertise, based in Philadelphia, consists of 15 engineers who provide design and evaluation services, ten of whom are also rope-access certified technicians.

    USACE Marine Design Center managing procurement of dredge for Azerbaijan

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Marine Design Center is managing the procurement of a dredge for the nation of Azerbaijan, as part of a broader U.S. Department of Defense program to enhance Azerbaijan’s maritime security.  The dredge will enable the Coast Guard of the State Border Service to operate its fleet of vessels and maintain access to the harbor entrance and shipping channels of ports located in the Caspian Sea.

    Steve England and Jake Helminiak of the USACE Philadelphia District traveled to the Kingdom of Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) to participate in workshops, field visits, and to share their expertise with government officials. During the visit, the group met with hydrologists and field technicians from the Department of Water Affairs. They visited multiple dams, gaging stations, and a local agricultural water impoundment.

    Two USACE hydraulic engineers traveled to Africa in mid-March to share their expertise on a variety of groundwater-related issues. Steve England and Jake Helminiak of the USACE Philadelphia District traveled to the Kingdom of Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) to participate in workshops, field visits, and to share their expertise with government officials.

    The Dredge Fullerton, owned and operated by Barnegat Bay Dredging Company, conducts dredging in the New Jersey Intracoastal Waterway near Stone Harbor, N.J. as part of a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project. The sediment was placed to create habitat on marshland owned by the New Jersey Division of Fish & Wildlife.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and its contractor Barnegat Bay Dredging Company recently completed a dredging and marsh restoration project near Stone Harbor, N.J. Work involved dredging sediment from the channel of the New Jersey Intracoastal Waterway and beneficially using the material to create habitat on marshland owned by the New Jersey Division of Fish & Wildlife.

    On May 25, 2018, USACE and its partners celebrated the completion of the Absecon Inlet seawall and boardwalk rebuild in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The project accomplishes two goals - reduces the risk of storm damages for the community and restores access to recreational opportunities along the inlet.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia District joined elected officials and partners on May 25, 2018 to celebrate the completion of the Absecon Inlet seawall and boardwalk rebuild in Atlantic City. The project – one of the more complex construction efforts undertaken by the District in recent years – involved building two separate seawall structures along approximately 1700 feet of the inlet and rebuilding the historic boardwalk.

    The McFarland, a deep-draft hopper dredge owned and operated by USACE Philadelphia District, conducted urgent dredging for 62 days on the Southwest Pass of the Mississippi River starting in late March of 2015. The dredge was called upon because high stages impacted navigation along the Mississippi River.

    Camden students learn about environmental cleanup during visit with Army Corps

    Eleven high school students from Camden County, N.J. learned about environmental remediation, large-scale construction, and the importance of problem solving during a visit with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia District.

    Chief of Engineers visits Philadelphia District

    Lt. Gen. Thomas P. Bostick, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Commanding General and the Chief of Engineers, toured the Philadelphia District and met with leadership, staff, student interns, and the crew of the Dredge McFarland during an April 23 visit.

    USACE holds emergency response exercise in Philadelphia

    More than 150 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers personnel descended on Fort Mifflin in Philadelphia June 10-14 to participate in a national emergency response exercise. The exercise, which involved simulating response activities to a category 3 hurricane, was designed to prepare teams and individuals for real events.

    Army Corps repairs canal bulkhead with innovative project

    When the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers needs to repair a dam outlet, marine bulkhead or any other infrastructure submerged in the water, it presents an engineering challenge. The added variable can make repairs more difficult, costly and time-consuming. Through resourcefulness and innovation, the Corps' Philadelphia District and its contractor are nearing completion of work at the Point Pleasant Canal.

    Division commander visits Philadelphia District

    Col. Kent Savre, commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers North Atlantic Division, met with regional stakeholders and held a town hall meeting during a visit to the Philadelphia District Sept 10-13.
