    BHM speakers highlight value, importance of time

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Transatlantic Middle East District (TAM) held a Black History Month celebration Feb. 26. The event was held virtually and featured two guest speakers: Staff Sgt. Buddy C. Reynolds, a 100-year-old World War II veteran and the Honorable Randall Johnson Jr., a District Judge in Richmond, Va.

    A Celebration of Black History

    Annually, we celebrate Black History Month to commemorate and acknowledge the critical role African Americans have played in shaping American culture and ideals. As America continues to confront its past, we must continue to affirm, celebrate, and honor African Americans' resiliency. Carter G. Woodson, a Harvard-trained historian, believed that truth could not be denied and that reason would prevail over prejudice.

    Engineering pioneer remembered during Black History Month

    This February, Black History Month, the Sacramento District celebrates the life and achievements of one of the most extraordinary women in the history of the entire U.S. Army Corps of Engineers—Hattie Peterson.
  • Galveston, TEXAS- The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District celebrated African American Black History Month 20 Feb. at the Jadwin Building. The guest speaker was Mr. Frank Jackson, Assistant Vice Chancellor for State Relations, Texas A&M University System, Prairie View A&M University. Jackson spoke about African American History from Ancient time to the present day. He informed the audience of the grandeur of the African civilizations prior to the slavery of Africans in the western hemisphere. His central theme was the oneness of the human family on the planet earth. Jackson said, “All civilizations have borrowed from one another. African history is world history. The reason for African history is to tell the whole story of humanity.” Black History Month originally started in 1915 fifty years after the emancipation by Carter G. Woodson who earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Chicago and his doctorate from Harvard. W.E.B. DuBois and Dr. Woodson believed that early 20th century African Americans were not being taught enough about their own heritage and achievements that their ancestors had made to society. He first announced what was back then called the national Negro History week in February 1926. He chose the month of February to coincide with Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass birthday. In 1976, fifty years after the first Negro History Week the Association for the Study of African American History officially changed with the times to Black History Month. Every U.S. president since 1976 has officially issued that proclamation designating February as now days Black African American History Month. By Dr. Rose M. Caballero, D.M., D.Min.

    Corps employees get taste of Nashville’s black history

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Feb. 20, 2020) — Corps employees got a taste of Nashville’s black history today during a tour and lunch at Woolworth’s on Fifth Avenue.

    Senior electrical engineer honored as ‘Modern-Day Technology Leader’

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Feb. 19, 2020) – Officials honored a senior electrical engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District as a “Modern-Day Technology Leader” during the 34th Black Engineers of the Year Awards Technology Recognition Luncheon Feb. 14 in Washington, D.C.

    Engineer School Commandant’s promotion makes American History

    It was fitting that the promotion ceremony for newly promoted Brig. Gen. Mark C. Quander took place on Feb. 14, 2020, halfway through Black History Month. The extended Quander family is the only African American family to produce four general officers in the U.S. military. The other three general officers who encompass this history were also in attendance at the promotion ceremony: Gen. (ret.) Vincent K. Brooks, Maj. Gen. (ret.) Leo A. Brooks, Sr., and Brig. Gen. (ret.) Leo A. Brooks, Jr. The Brooks family remains the only African American family to have three general from the same immediate family, and is connected to the Quander family tree in several ways, with the primary link being through Naomi Lewis Brooks, the mother to Leo Jr. and Vincent Brooks.
