Chesapeake and Delaware Canal -- PHILADELPHIA (August 19, 2026) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia District announced portions of the Michael N. Castle Trail along the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal will be closed on weekdays from August 24th through September 4th. The trail closure is necessary for the Army Corps' contractor to complete maintenance work on Summit Bridge.
The path closure will be in the vicinity of Summit Bridge and will prevent continuous travel from Chesapeake City to Lums Pond trailheads.
This temporary closure is part of the ongoing painting and steel repair contract for Summit Bridge. Construction activities in this area will present an overhead hazard for pedestrians along the trail. As a precaution, the trail will be closed to all pedestrian traffic on weekdays. The trail will remain open on weekends.
The Summit Bridge is a cantilever truss bridge that carries four lanes of Delaware Route 896 over the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal.
UPDATE - a different section of the trail near Delaware City will be closed on August 24, 2026 while a different USACE contractor removes pipe and ramp. That section of trail will reopen on August 25, 2026.
