NORFOLK, Virginia – The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded, AMG JV of Leesburg, Virginia, a contract to renovate the administration building at Arlington National Cemetery.

The Leesburg based small business is tasked with completing the more than $9.8 million project, which will update, repair and refurbish the 1976-built facility.

The administration building houses cemetery staff who plan, coordinate and participate in funeral services, as well as provides waiting areas for family and friends to gather prior to funeral ceremonies.

Improvements to the facility include reconfiguration of spaces to accommodate current needs, asbestos abatement, as well as bringing the facility up-to-date with current building and fire codes. Work will also include cleaning of exterior cladding, roof repairs, exterior steps and ramps.

Because the building contributes to Arlington National Cemetery’s listing in the National Historic Register, many of the characteristics like the natural wood finish trim work, book matched paneling and use of natural light will be preserved as part of the renovation process.

Cemetery staff, who work in the administrative building, will work in temporary buildings while the 10,445 square foot facility goes through renovation.

There will be no impact to funeral operations or scheduling of services, the temporary building will be adjacent to the current administration building.

The work is expected to be completed by late-summer 2020.
