Corps of Engineers restores power to Rockaway's public housing

To date, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has more than 38 FEMA Mission Assignments exceeding $134 million. Providing temporary emergency power to the nine buildings at the Redfern Housing Complex,in Far Rockaway, N.Y., as well as roughly 50 other buildings in six complexes throughout Far Rockaway, is one of those mission assignments. Some of the buildings, like four of the nine in the Redfern complex, must have water pumped out of the basements before power can be restored.

BROOKLYN, New York – As the sun set at the Redfern Housing Complex in Far Rockaway, N.Y., Nov. 6, cheers erupted from the windows. Residents in the complex had been without power since Hurricane Sandy devastated the northeast a week prior. But because of a joint effort by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, other branch components and federal and state partners working through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), power is continuing to be restored in Rockaway and other hard-hit areas throughout New York and New Jersey.

To date, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has more than 38 FEMA Mission Assignments exceeding $134 million. Providing temporary emergency power to the nine buildings at the Redfern Housing Complex, as well as roughly 50 other buildings in six complexes throughout Far Rockaway, is one of those mission assignments.

USACE is actively supporting emergency temporary power missions in New York and New Jersey and is ready to provide emergency temporary power with more than 294 generators staged at forward locations. This mission assignment includes hauling, installing, operating and maintaining generators at critical facilities.

Nearly 355 power assessments have been completed to date. Eighty generators have been installed in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. The installation of 39 more generators is ongoing.
