    Partnership put Craney, port issues on display for senator

    Often referred to as the jewel of Hampton Roads, the Norfolk District put Craney Island Dredged Material Management Area on display through a partnership of port, state and corps officials for Sen. Tim Kaine Thursday.

    Cadet Ryan Bunn, entering his senior year at Gonzaga University (Spokane, Washington) in fall 2014 pursuing a degree in engineering, flew across the U.S. in July 2014 to serve an internship with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, through the university’s Bulldog Battalion Reserve Officers Training Corps.

    Contractors began work dredging channels near the town of Wachapreague Sunday. Cottrell Contracting Corporation’s dredge Marion began dredging Bradford Bay and will work its way northwest into Finney Creek and finally into Wachapreague Channel.

    In summer 2014, Army ROTC cadets interned with the New York District through the Reserve Officers Training Corps’ Cadet Troop Leader Training, providing a variety of leadership experiences prior to the senior year of college.
  • Norfolk District 135: William Price Craighill

    William Price Craighill was the fourth officer in charge of what would later become the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He became the Corps’ first Southeast Division Engineer, overseeing coastal fortification projects in Hampton Roads.
  • Third Gathright Dam pulse release scheduled for tomorrow

    The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will conduct a pulse release beginning at 6 a.m. tomorrow at Gathright Dam. The release, the third of six scheduled pulses, will increase levels 3 to 4.5 feet in the Jackson River and will end at 1:30 p.m.

    Eleven high school students from Camden County, N.J. learned about environmental remediation, large-scale construction, and the importance of problem solving during a visit with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia District.

    Frederick A. Hinman removed sunken vessels “obstructing or endangering navigation,” including the barge Albemarle near Hog Island lighthouse in Virginia, the schooner Maria and Elizabeth near Cape Charles lighthouse in Virginia, the schooner Tarry Not near Craney Island near the mouth of the Nansemond River, the schooner Anthea Godfrey in “Lynn Haven Roads, Virginia” [sic] (which was destroyed by explosives after having shown the wreck and cargo were valueless), and the steamer Concord, which was burned and sunk in the Pamplico River near Washington, North Carolina.
