The planning, projects and programs were vital, and several milestones were accomplished by several disciplined group of individuals and teams that used their expertise to successfully accomplish this critical mission.

    Residents of Grimsby Street in Midland Beach, Staten Island, New York noticed a large puddle of water in their neighborhood. Days went by – there was the puddle, a few months go by – there still was the puddle. The body of water was there so long residents began counting the days – 280! A resident said that it got to the point that the neighborhood named it Grimsby Lake.

    A new senior noncommissioned officer dormitory opened on Osan Air Base, in the Republic of Korea (ROK), Nov. 5. The project was funded by the ROK government as part of a ROK funded construction in-kind project. The Ministry of National Defense - Defense Installations Agency (MND-DIA) was responsible for executing and managing the construction contract. The US Army Corps of Engineers Far East District worked with MND-DIA to provide construction quality assurance.

This is true across the Corps whether it be at the Division or District level. One of the more recent examples being the New York District’s response when Hurricane Sandy caused significant damages within its area of responsibility, including severe damage to the District’s Caven Point Marine Terminal in October 2012.

    In response to Executive Orders 13514 and 13653, the United States Army Corps of Engineers today released its Climate Change Adaptation Plan and annual Strategic Sustainability Plan. "The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has been factoring climate change and its impacts in to all its missions and operations for decades. The Corps of Engineers is working with the Obama Administration to identify and address the existing and future risks and vulnerabilities of climate change and ensure that communities and ecosystems are protected and flourish." said Jo-Ellen Darcy, Assistant Secretary of the Army (Civil Works) and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Senior Sustainability Officer.
