    Norfolk District prepares response teams, project sites for Hurricane Joaquin

    Ahead of Hurricane Joaquin, the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is taking the following measures to protect the health and safety of Virginians, and prevent flooding and damage at its military and civil work project sites throughout the commonwealth.

    Gathright Dam pulse release scheduled for Sept. 2

    Operators at Gathright Dam near Covington, Virginia will conduct a pulse release Wednesday. The pulses will increase levels 3 to 4.5 feet in the Jackson River, and experts advise people who use the river to be aware of the river fluctuations caused by the pulses.

In 1987 the Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot became a matter of public concern when a piece of crystalline TNT was found at the Tidewater Community College, Portsmouth Campus. Extensive historical research, investigations, and testing led the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to place this site on the National Priority list in 1999.     FNOD Restoration Advisory Board to meet Thursday

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will host their quarterly public meeting regarding restoration efforts at the Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot Thursday. The Restoration Advisory Board meeting; which will take place at the Courtyard Marriott, 8060 Harbour View Blvd. in Suffolk from 6:15 to 8:15 p.m.; will feature discussions regarding the latest cleanup progress.

    Aegis Ashore team finds timely solution to portable power need

    NAVAL SUPPORT FACILITY DEVESELU, Romania (May 12, 2015) -- A U.S. Navy base, under construction in Romania, is using U.S. Soldiers to ensure that the second phase of the European Phased Adaptive Approach, or EPAA, to ballistic missile defense of U.S. and allied interests becomes operational on time.
  • Huntsville Center awarded a $12 million Energy Savings Performance Contract to save energy and funds spent on energy at the U.S. Navy’s Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command Systems Center in San Diego, Calif. Highlights of the work performed by the contractor included water conservation measures, chilled water air conditioning upgrades, a heating and hot water retrofit, upgraded air handlers, electronic control systems and lighting upgrades at 3 million square foot, 225 building campus. The total expected energy cost savings is $23 million during the 19-year term of the contract.

    Navy’s SPAWAR sees reduced energy costs with Huntsville Center’s Energy Savings Performance Contract

    The U.S. Navy’s Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command Systems Center Pacific used a Huntsville Center Energy Savings Performance Contract to reduce energy costs. The ESPC model used at Huntsville Center is an agreement between the government and an energy service contractor which provides capital and expertise to make comprehensive energy and water efficiency improvements on facilities or implement new renewable energy capabilities and maintains them in exchange for a portion of the generated savings.

    President’s budget includes $27.9M for Virginia civil works projects

    President Obama’s proposed Fiscal Year 2016 budget transmitted to Congress includes $4.732 billion in gross discretionary funding for the civil works program of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Of that sum, the budget provides $27,968,000 for a variety of Norfolk District projects, including $800,000 to study the deepening of the Norfolk Harbor Channel to 55 feet.

    Final Gathright Dam pulse release scheduled tomorrow cancelled

    The Norfolk District has cancelled the sixth and final pulse release from Gathright Dam due to heavy rainfall expected in the area over the next 24 to 36 hours.

    Contractors began work dredging channels near the town of Wachapreague Sunday. Cottrell Contracting Corporation’s dredge Marion began dredging Bradford Bay and will work its way northwest into Finney Creek and finally into Wachapreague Channel.

    Kristen Donofrio, a biological scientist with the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers since 2009. Her passion is ecology - the study of environmental systems, or as it is sometimes called, the economy of nature. According to Donofrio, environmental usually means relating to the natural, versus human-made world, and by its very nature, not just the components of nature but how the parts interact.

    Careers don’t always STEM from childhood dreams

    On sunny days, Kristen Donofrio’s long strides carry her toward her beloved sport bike. The biologist reaches the parking spot and swings a leg over her cobalt blue motorcycle, slides a slick, made-for-speed helmet over her dark brown bob, and turns the engine over. Her pianist fingers play over the bike’s grips, and she launches herself into Norfolk’s afternoon traffic. On the ride home, shorelines and wetlands churning with life blur past her – ecosystems that, as a biologist, she is committed to saving.

    Going big: district tackles oysters, Lynnhaven

    Contractors for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are moving mountains of fossil oyster shell from Craney Island in Portsmouth, Va., to build 16 acres of sanctuary reefs in Elizabeth River and some of its tributaries, while the work to bring environmental restoration on the Lynnhaven River is ongoing.

    Mooring points small projects yield big rewards in rural Alaska

    Pipes and chains sticking out of the ground are hardly a flashy engineering feat, but the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers -- Alaska District is frugally designing and quickly delivering mooring points to some of Alaska's most rural communities located on the Yukon and Kuskokwim rivers.
