Taking care of the Earth is an everyday mission for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, but the agency does find ways each spring to increase its emphasis on sustainability and environmental stewardship.

The Earth is a truly marvelous and beautiful planet, and it is the responsibility of all of us to keep it that way.

We will celebrate Earth Day on Wednesday, April 22, as a global established for just that purpose; to celebrate the wonder of life on our planet and to remind everyone that we must continue to restore and protect it and stay ever vigilant to its health and well-being.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has been cognizant of those facts since our origin.

It has long been an advocate for restoring and protecting the environment, and continues to be on the front lines of such efforts.

Today, the North Atlantic Division administers the U.S. EPA's Superfund Program in the Northeast, bringing the latest equipment and technologies to bear on the ravages of the past. We have the largest Superfund program in the Corps.

We clean up hazardous and toxic materials at current and formerly used military sites, like Spring Valley in Maryland and the Raritan Arsenal in New Jersey.

We design and build new military facilities that are ecologically sound and environmentally safe, like the work we are doing throughout Europe and in the Northeast.

As part of our oversight to protect our resources, each year NAD reviews and issues thousands of permits for unique activities associated with our wetlands and waterways.

We diligently monitor and regulate these activities to insure that they conform to environmental rules and regulations.

Our boats and crewmembers remove drift and debris from five major East Coast ports and hundreds of smaller waterways, maintaining their beauty and safety.

We truly THINK GREEN!

Take pride in knowing that, as part of the Corps, you are helping to restore, maintain, and protect our planet and make the world environmentally aware.

I urge you to carry your professional care over into your personal life.  Save energy, don't litter, use environmentally safe and energy-efficient products and services, reuse and recycle wherever possible.

Spread the word to your family, friends, neighbors, coworkers and customers.  Make them aware so we can all continue to make the Earth a cleaner, safer, better place.

We're extremely proud of our environmental accomplishments and to be part of the North Atlantic Division team and Earth Day 2015.
