Norfolk District repairs to Chesapeake, Va.'s North Landing Bridge

The North Landing Bridge, which spans the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway on the border of Chesapeake, Virginia and Virginia Beach, Virginia, handles approximately 11,000 vehicles per day under normal conditions. The bridge was damaged by two separate barge strikes, the first on March 1, 2016, the second on June 4, 2016.

NORFOLK, Va. – North Landing Bridge, which spans the Albemarle & Chesapeake Canal in Chesapeake, will temporarily close to vehicular traffic from 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 15 to 2 p.m. Friday, May 17 while the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers replaces an underwater electrical cable and makes other electrical and mechanical repairs to the bridge.

The bridge will close to navigation on Wednesday, May 15 and Thursday, May 16 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The bridge will be fully open to navigation between 6 p.m. and 10 a.m. during this time.

Motorists traveling north on Mount Pleasant Road in Chesapeake can detour around the bridge by using Centerville Turnpike to Elbow Road to Indian River Road, back to North Landing Road. The detour should be followed in reverse for motorists traveling south on North Landing Road in Virginia Beach.

Vessels traveling along the Albemarle & Chesapeake Canal can contact the North Landing Bridge operator on Marine Channel 13 for additional information.

North Landing Bridge is located on the border between Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, where Mount Pleasant Road turns into North Landing Road, 2953 Mount Pleasant Road, Virginia Beach.
