BROOKLYN, New York – Two U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Planning and Response Teams (PRTs) are coordinating damage assessments of public buildings, waste and waste water treatment plants, and transportation infrastructure in areas of New York and New Jersey impacted by Hurricane Sandy. The teams are working as part of the multi-agency response effort directed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
A USACE team based in Seattle, Wash., is working on projects in New Jersey and another team based in Buffalo, N.Y., is working in New York. Each team has four members. They are currently assessing needs, identifying available resources and working to synchronize their efforts with current response and recovery operations.
Projects the teams are working on include:
- Nassau County (N.Y.) Water Treatment Plant
- Hoboken (N.J.) Ferry Terminal
- Liberty State Park
- Seabright-Monmouth (N.J.) Beach Seawall
- Middlesex (N.J.) Waste Water Treatment Plant
- Sites in Mantoloking, N.J.
- Sites in Cape May-Sandy Hook, N.J.
- Sites in Moonachie, N.J.
As the region moves from response to recovery, the infrastructure assessment teams will remain prepared to respond to additional FEMA mission assignments as needed.
