Hiram M. Chittenden was a graduate of West Point, a U.S. Army Engineer, and a historian of the American West. He reached the rank of Brigadier General in 1910. As a Lieutenant and Captain in the late 1800s and early 1900s Chittenden served as an engineer at Yellowstone National Park constructing and improving roads and bridges within the park.
