 Who We Are

Baltimore District’s Regional Center of Expertise (RCX) for Fire Protection Engineering (FPE) provides fire protection engineering design and technical support services within the project delivery business process. The RCX was established in 2008 but has been providing regional technical support since 2001.

Specific Expertise Includes:

  • NFPA Life Safety Code Compliance Analysis
  • Fire Hazard Identification and Classification
  • Occupancy Classification
  • Fire Alarm and Notification System Design
  • Fire Suppression System Design (Aqueous and Non-Aqueous Systems)
  • Mass Notification System Design
  • Integration and Modern Fire Alarm, Suppression, and Notification Systems in Renovations of Existing and Historic Structures

  • Hydrant Flow Testing and Water Supply Analysis
  • Occupancy Classification and Hazard Identification
  • Coordination with Project Architects and Engineers on Life Safely and other NFPA Code Compliance Issues
  • Design of Fire Protection Systems, including Alarm, Suppression, and Mass Notification Systems
  • Engineering Assistance During Construction on Fire Protection Related Issues

 Our Expertise

Military Construction Projects
The NAD FPE RCX provides engineering support as a member of the design team on in-house design projects. The RCX also provides Independent Technical Review capabilities on A-E Designs, and Compliance Review capabilities on Design-Bid-Build Projects.

Renovation Projects
The NAD FPE RCX provides engineering support or Renovation Projects throughout the NAD footprint. These projects often offer significant challenges to the fire protection engineer, but the RCX consistently meets these challenges in innovative and creative ways.

 Code Compliance
The NAD Fire Protection Engineering Regional Center of Expertise provides design review, input, and execution in compliance with all applicable codes, criteria, and standards. FPE RCX also coordinates any fire protection design or construction issues with the appropriate authorities having jurisdiction.
